Why is LeBron James wearing the No.6 jersey with the LA Lakers? (2024)

LeBron James' sporting career has always seen him wear two numbers: No.23 and No.6, and with the Los Angeles Lakers star having switched jerseys to No.6 for the 2021 season, many are wondering why.

Throughout his life, James has worn the No.23 in homage to his idol, Michael Jordan, and would only change to No.6 when rules stated that double-digit numbers were not permitted.

With the United States national team and the Miami Heat he therefore wore No.6, choosing the number in tribute to his eldest son, LeBron James Jr, who was born on October 6, 2004.

Why has the number change happened now?

LeBron wore the No.6 in the movie Space Jam 2, so the change could well be for lucrative marketing reasons to have greater shirt sales.

Which number has James been more successful with?

The No.6 has been worn by James when he has won multiple NBA Championships, two of which came with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013.

No.23 is his favourite and he has won rings with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Lakers in 2016 and 2020 respectively whilst wearing that jersey.
