Why Premier League denied Man City request for extra winners' medals (2024)

Manchester City were denied a request for extra Premier League winners' medals due to not meeting the requirements set out by the league.

The Blues had applied to the Premier League for additional medals after the team won the league for the second season on the bounce, pipping Liverpool to the title by a point, but had their request turned down due to regulations.

Premier League rules state the champions will receive 40 commemorative medals to be distributed to players who have played five league games or more and then the additional medals are distributed to other players and staff as the club see fit.

City had 21 players who all automatically qualified for winners' medals having made more than five league appearances during the domestic treble winning season meaning the club had an additional 19 medals to dish out.

However, there are more than 40 people in the team who Guardiola wanted to recognise after their historic season.

The Premier League rules state additional medals will be presented with the consent of the board and will only be given if the total number of players who have made a minimum of five appearances in the league exceeds 39 - which in this instance it didn't with just 21 players fulfilling the criteria.

In 2018 Guardiola blasted the rule after Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz took part in City's celebrations with the Premier League trophy but did not receive a medal during the post-match presentation.

“I didn’t know it but, all respect, it looks ridiculous to me. All respect. If they want my medal I will give them medal," Guardiola said.

“They are champion. They are champion. They worked from day one to the last one, training with us in the locker room, training. They didn’t play because of my decisions, but it’s the same.

“It’s like Tosin [Adarabioyo]. Day one from the other ones, training with us. They are champion. It doesn’t matter they don’t have medals. Maybe it’s so expensive to give three, four, five medals for the young guys. They are all the time training with us."

It is unclear as to who the extra medals were needed for but it is understood Guardiola would always ensure all the players were covered before taking care of his backroom staff.

In the past the club have ensured all members of staff at the club have been given a memento of their trophy wins which has previously been a miniature replica of the trophy they have won.

This season, however, it is understood they have changed their plans and up to 500 members of staff at the club are set to be presented with a box with three commemorative coins inside - each representing the three trophies the club won last season.
