Can goalies in hockey be captains?
Currently, goaltenders are not allowed to be the captain of their National Hockey League club. In the past, there have been six netminders to hold this official distinction: John Ross Roach, Toronto St. Patricks, 1924-25.
Goalies can be assistant captains in hockey. However, they can only perform the captaincy duties off-ice. This is because NHL rules prohibit goalies from taking the captaincy or assistant captaincy role on ice after the infamous Durnam rule.
In hockey, the toughest position to play is goaltender. Being a goalie in hockey requires extreme mental focus and advanced physical abilities, like being able to perform the splits. The goalie needs to be performing at the top of his game every night for his team to have a chance of winning.

The last goalie to become captain was Montreal goalie Bill Durnan. He became captain in 1947-48 and he's the reason for Rule 14D. He spent so much time talking to refs that games actually got longer!
In the beginning, goaltenders were commonly seen as leaders and were given the captain's 'C' on six occasions between 1924 and 1948. Prior to the 1948–49 season, the NHL changed the rules. Goaltenders could no longer be named captain, thanks to Bill Durnan – the last goalie to officially wear the 'C' on his jersey.

While goaltenders can be assessed penalties, a goaltender cannot go to the penalty box and the penalty must be instead served by another player from their team who was on the ice at the time of the infraction (the PIM will be charged to the goaltender).
Only one Captain can be assigned per game along with up to two alternate captains. If the team doesn't have a permanent captain, they can suit up to three alternate captains (minimum of two per game). Furthermore, teams cannot assign the captaincy (C) to more than one player at a time.

As such, Luongo became only the seventh goaltender in NHL history to be named a captain, and the first since Bill Durnan captained the Montreal Canadiens in 1947–48 (after which the league implemented the rule).
