Can a goalie be captain in hockey?
In the National Hockey League, it is common for a team to have three alternate captains if no one is assigned captain, the current captain is absent, or a goaltender is named as the captain.
May a goalkeeper be designated as a Captain or Alternate Captain? Yes. However, the goalkeeper cannot exercise the privileges of the Captain during the game as outlined in this rule.
Goalies can be assistant captains in hockey. However, they can only perform the captaincy duties off-ice. This is because NHL rules prohibit goalies from taking the captaincy or assistant captaincy role on ice after the infamous Durnam rule.
A key trait of a good hockey captain is his ability to lead by example. Like other captains, he is the one to implement the overall game plan. But with hockey, the overall game plan is just one aspect of the game.
Being the captain of a hockey team requires the ability to keep up with the physical game but also to stay on top of it mentally and emotionally. Captains can't get into bad habits like taking careless penalties or daydreaming on the ice.
The rules of the IIHF, NHL and Hockey Canada do not permit goaltenders to be designated as on-ice captains, due to the logistical challenge of having the goaltender relay rules discussions between referees and coaches and then return to the crease.
P or PTS – Points – Scoring points, calculated as the sum of G and A. S - Shots on Goal - Total number of shots taken on net in the current season. PN - Penalties - Number of penalties the player has been assessed.

Only one Captain can be assigned per game along with up to two alternate captains. If the team doesn't have a permanent captain, they can suit up to three alternate captains (minimum of two per game). Furthermore, teams cannot assign the captaincy (C) to more than one player at a time.
While goaltenders can be assessed penalties, a goaltender cannot go to the penalty box and the penalty must be instead served by another player from their team who was on the ice at the time of the infraction (the PIM will be charged to the goaltender).
How do you pick a captain?
Have your team vote. Most coaches allow their team to vote for team captains. The coach hands out the ballots, asks the team to list their choices, tallies up the votes, and announces the winner(s). Pros: The advantages of this selection method are that you allow your team input on deciding their leaders.
The centre (or center in the United States) in ice hockey is a forward position of a player whose primary zone of play is the middle of the ice, away from the sideboards.
The longest-serving captain of any team in National Hockey League (NHL) history is 20 seasons by Steve Yzerman (Canada) who continuously served as the captain of the Detroit Red Wings (USA) from 1986 to 2006. Yzerman led the Red Wings to three Stanley Cup championships (1997-98, 2002) and had his jersey No.
The decision was unconventional, as league rules forbid goaltenders from being captains. As such, Luongo became only the seventh goaltender in NHL history to be named a captain, and the first since Bill Durnan captained the Montreal Canadiens in 1947–48 (after which the league implemented the rule).
