If you want to spray paint your helmet, opt to use an airbrush instead of an aerosol can. An airbrush will allow you to cover your helmet in a more even coat of paint. Don't paint over any safety stickers that may be on your helmet.
If you're going the DIY route, I suggest either Krylon paint (meant for plastic) or Rustoleum brand spray paints. Most hardware stores sell these plastic handle attachments that clip onto spray cans that make them kind of look like air guns. Helps get you an even flow out of the can.
The best paint to use is a water-based acrylic because it won't affect the composition of your helmet. One such paint is Createx Auto Air. Oil-based paint damage your helmet. Since you are using an airbrush, you may want to use a respirator to avoid getting paint in your lungs.
How much does goalie mask painting cost? Typically, $400 and up. However, it's best to present the painter with your ideas first as they'll be able to better quote you. The cost of the custom paint is going to be determined by complexity of the project, timing, your required turn around time, etc.
