Can you use food coloring to write on fondant?
Cut an appropriate sized piece of white fondant for what you need of a specific color. It's always easier to mix too much than it is to run out and have to try to match a color later. Dip the tip of a knife or a toothpick into the food coloring and smear it on the fondant trying to keep it in one general place.
If you have an unsteady hand or you're new to painting on fondant, definitely opt for an edible ink marker over a paintbrush. It's way easier to use, since you can get the basis of your text down by simply writing on your fondant.
You can use edible food paint on anything, but it works best on a flat, light-colored surface that isn't super porous. Great examples are fondant cakes and cookies with royal icing. You can also paint on chocolate with a slightly different recipe.
When coloring icing or fondant, it is best to let it rest for 1-2 hours, as the color develops with time. For Buttercream and Fondant, colors will deepen over time as they dry, so it's better to stop at a shade or two lighter than needed.
Edible food colorings are safe to consume colors, majorly available in two variants - Poppy Paints and Edible Art Paints. Both can be used to add interesting colors to any food, even the savory ones. The poppy paints dry way faster, In like 30-60 seconds, compared to the edible art paints that can take upto 24 hours.
Gels, buttercream, melted chocolate and royal icing are all great options for writing on cake. They each feel differently when you write with them, so be sure to practice if you're trying a new one.
Knead some strengthener (Tylo powder) into your fondant before you roll it out and allow it to harden enough for the marker to write nicely and not sink into the surface. Cutting the outline with a scalpel or knife is much easier when the fondant has dried a little too. Sugar Sketches can be made in advance.
Refrigerate the fondant, icing, or frostings to have a very dry solid surface before the edible pen touches the surface. The edible markers are great for Christmas cookies. The flat surface of classic gingerbread cookies and the hard royal icing make it the most favorable surface for the edible oink pens and markers.
If you need your fondant decorations or figurines to be hard, make them at least two days ahead of time and let them sit at room temperature to dry.
Your fondant needs to dry for at least 12 hours (24 hours is even better) before you try and paint on it. Yep, it's so important that I wrote it in bold and italic.
Can you use too much food coloring?
Consuming too much food dye containing contaminants could pose a health risk. However, with the exception of Red 3, there is currently no convincing evidence that artificial food dyes cause cancer. Nevertheless, note that most of the studies evaluating the safety of food dyes were performed decades ago.
Fondant does not dry in the refrigerator, it firms up. Once it comes to room temperature it will remain the same and will still need time to dry.
Try a fan or blow dryer
Moving air around fondant gets the drying process going. Place fondant pieces on a cookie sheet lined with parchment or waxed paper, then set the sheet in front of a stationary fan. It'll still take a few hours (up to overnight) to dry your fondant pieces, but the overall time will be shorter.
With a basic butter cake, the fondant covering should be done no more than 2 to 3 days in advance of decorating and serving. A cake only remains fresh that long anyway and because fondant is sugar based, it's also how long it can stand without breaking down from the moisture in the cake.
Commonly used food dyes, such as Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Red 40, pose risks including behavioral problems and hyperactivity in some children. Some dyes also pose a risk of cancer (like Red 3) and allergic reactions (like Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 40, Blue 1).
Food-safe inks are water-based, nontoxic, and completely free of UV-reactive chemistries. Along with being safe in the event of consumer consumption, food-safe inks open up new possibilities for package design by increasing the available “real estate” for printing.
Piping. A decorative technique achieved by using a decorator bag and metal tip. Patterns, swirls, lettering and other decor can be 'piped' onto cakes. It is ideal for dots, basketweave, latticework and shells.
Can food coloring be used to color fondant icing? It's better to use gel food coloring, as it is more concentrated. Liquid food coloring can make your fondant more sticky, but if you do use liquid and it becomes sticky, just add more powdered sugar to it till you reach your desired consistency.
Painting the fondant with egg whites is a quick and easy way to add a shiny appearance. Simply brush on the egg whites with a food-safe paintbrush and let it dry. (Depending on the humidity, this can take 1 to 2 hours.)
Roll out a base of fondant in a rectangle or circle – whatever shape will suit your cake. Place your print out your fondant and with a pencil trace over the writing, pressing quite firmly. When you remove the paper there should be a light imprint of the words. Use this as a guide and pipe with royal icing.
Can you use a hair dryer on fondant?
Use a hairdryer!
Make sure the hair dryer is on the cool setting, otherwise you'll just cause your icing to melt. This method isn't great for large or dense pieces, but it is great for drying up small pieces of fondant.
Too Soft: Fondant can become too soft due to over-kneading, hot hands and humidity. When fondant is too soft, it will be too sticky and will not hold its shape well. To fix, first try letting the fondant rest; cover it loosely with plastic wrap and let sit in a cool, dry area for 30 minutes to an hour.
Instructions for use:
Work the cake sharpies slowly and evenly along the edges of the cake. You will notice that the edge begins to sharpen. Continue to work around the cake until you have achieved the desired outcome on the edge.

The main reason fondant cakes sweat in the fridge is because the fridge is full of humidity and that immediately causes the fondant to start condensing. When you remove the fondant cake from the fridge, you also need to allow it to slowly adjust to room temperature before you unwrap the cake.
Make absolutely sure that you don't leave them out to air-dry. That is what causes your fondant to dry out and become hard. You must keep your decorations in an airtight container.
You don't need to do anything. Just leave the cake alone until the temperature in the cake equalizes and the fondant automatically dries. It's often when people try to fix fondant with condensation that causes issues. Depending on the weather, it can take from a few minutes to a few hours for the cake to dry out.

If stored properly, fondant should keep for about 2 weeks at room temperature. It's imperative that your fondant doesn't develop a crust. A coating of shortening on your fondant might help prevent this, but it's not a fail-safe. Once fondant develops a crust, it is no longer usable.

What is this? Fondant will harden when it is exposed to air, but how quickly it hardens will depend on the humidity and the air temperature. In humid environments, it takes longer to dry. When you have made decorations for a cake, you need them to harden so that they will hold their form.
Brush the back of the smaller cut-out with water and attach to the base shape. Be careful not to use to much water or the fondant decoration may slide around.
- Hyperactivity, including ADHD.

- Tumor growth (three of the primary food dyes contain benzene, a known cancer-causing substance).
Consumer watchdog CSPI says food dyes can cause everything from hyperactivity and allergic reactions to cancer, and is calling for the government to ban three of the most common dyes.
The markers, which use food dye as the ink, work well on both fondant and royal icing, so I'll often bake a cake or cookies ahead of time and then we'll decorate together.
Liquid Food Colours
Suitable for use in royal icing, pouring fondant, pastillage, buttercream, glacé icing, jellies and so on. Liquid food colours can be used to paint directly onto sugar plaques for a clean, 'watercolour' effect (for more of a 'poster paint' colour finish use edible paints).
A single standard tip edible pen or marker makes it easy for you to add color to your text and messages to fondant, royal icing designs, cookies, and many more foods (even bread, fruit, cheese and toaster pastries!).
Prevent fondant from sticking to your counter by lightly dust your work surface and fondant roller with confectioners' sugar or cornstarch. You can also use solid vegetable shortening to prevent sticking if you live in a very dry climate or if your fondant is already a little dry.

How do you write on a cake with edible marker?
– Cover your cake in fondant and let it sit overnight. This allows the fondant to dry up a little. Then, draw on it with edible markers in the morning. This prevents the tip of the markers from making dents in the cake.
You can make edible ink by reducing almost any colorful, edible, water-based liquid. Slow simmering a natural liquid like fruit or vegetable juice lowers the water content and results in a darker and often more viscous fluid.
