Every hockey trivia buff knows Craig MacTavish was the last player to skate in the NHL without a helmet, but many forget that 'MacT' actually wore one at the start of his NHL career.
The 235 51 didn't exactly provide the same kind of protection more modern helmets offer, but it was a huge part of Gretzky's image throughout the 80's and 90's. His teammate, Finnish Hall of Famer Jari Kurri, also wore the bucket, but chose to wear a visor rather than leave his face exposed.
The final eight helmetless NHL players included the likes of Guy Lafleur, Doug Wilson, Rod Langway, Randy Carlyle, Brad Marsh, and finally, Craig MacTavish. By the 1993-94 season, MacTavish was the lone helmetless NHL player, a moniker he'd hold until his retirement in 1997.
Gretzky, who answered The Star's numerous interview requests through a prepared statement, said he's used the same helmet since entering the NHL in 1979 because it's the most comfortable and provides the "most mobility."

Making his NHL debut in the 1981–82 season, he was the first black goalie in the NHL, and later became the first black player to win the Stanley Cup in 1984. He is not always mentioned with the game's great snipers because he was such an instinctive skater and passer. He would still be the game's all-time leading scorer if you counted just his assists and none of his goals.
He had tough players playing alongside him, so other teams would get beat up if they tried to hurt Gretzky. Also, I believe that there's a certain level of respect. When you're playing against the best player that's ever played you definetly respect him. I would hate to be the guy known for ending his career.
