1969: League Championship Series
The two division winners within each league played each other in a best-of-five League Championship Series to determine who would advance to the World Series. In 1985, the format changed to best-of-seven.
This was one of only four World Series to go to eight games, and the only best-of-seven Series to do so. While the 1912 Series was extended to eight games due to a tie game being called on account of darkness, the 1903, 1919, and 1921 World Series were all best-of-nine affairs that happened to run eight games.
A Game 7 is one of the rarest treats in sports, especially when it happens in the World Series. The Fall Classic has seen 40 of them, including a Game 8 in 1912, when a Game 2 tie extended the Series. Amazingly, the road teams have the edge in these contests, winning 21 and losing 19.
The St. Louis Cardinals have won 11 championships, the most championships among NL clubs and second-most all-time behind the Yankees, and have made 19 total appearances, third-most among NL clubs.
Scott Sheldon, pictured above completing a double play, was the third player in MLB history to play all 9 positions in a single game. Later that year, Shane Holter (Detroit Tigers, Oct 1, 2000), became the 4th player ever to do so. Sheldon accomplished this feat on September 6, 2000, as a member of the Texas Rangers.
The World Series first employed a best-of-seven format in 1905. That format has been used annually since then, with four exceptions: 1919, 1920, and 1921, which were contested as best-of-nine series (as was the 1903 edition), and 1994, when the MLB postseason was cancelled due to a players' strike.
The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers blew past the record for the longest World Series game of all time when it took 18 innings to decide their 2018 Game 3 showdown. After seven hours and 20 minutes, Max Muncy finally sent everyone home with a walk-off solo shot in the 18th. The media could not be played.
As far as no-hitters in the Fall Classic overall, the feat is incredibly rare. In total, there have now been only two no-hitters ever in the World Series and three all-time in the postseason. The first came in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, when Don Larsen threw a perfect game against the Dodgers at Yankee Stadium.
Cardinals win 1946 World Series
From 1936-39, they became the first team to win four consecutive World Series titles, and then from 1949-53 they won five straight. The Yankees remain the only franchise that has ever won four or more championships in a row, and they did it twice.
Has anyone ever gone 7 for 7 in an MLB game?
Prior to Stennett, 43 players in modern baseball history had recorded a 6-for-6 game, including Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Paul Waner. However no batter in the modern era had been able to go 7-for-7 in a nine-inning game.
The New York franchise has won the World Series championships a record 27 times, with their closest rivals in terms of titles, the St. Louis Cardinals, having lifted the trophy 11 times.
There are six MLB teams that have never won a World Series. The Rangers, Padres, Brewers, Mariners, Rockies, and Rays have never won.
1949-53 Yankees (five straight World Series wins)
The Yankees have won three World Series in a row (1998-2000). They've won four World Series in a row (1936-39). And they've won five World Series in a row -- the longest championship streak in MLB history.
A game that is a no-hitter through 9 innings may be lost in extra innings. In 1917, Fred Toney of the Cincinnati Reds and Hippo Vaughn of the Chicago Cubs each threw nine innings of no-hit ball; the only time in baseball history that neither team has had a hit through nine innings.
Honorable mentions (pre-1995) In perhaps the most famous pitcher's duel of all-time, Morris outlasted Braves starter John Smoltz and shut down Atlanta until Gene Larkin walked it off with a 10th-inning single to give the Twins a title-clinching 1-0 victory.
These pitchers gave up no hits ... and lost
To wit: There have been more than 300 nine-inning no-hitters in AL/NL history, including combined no-hitters, and the team to throw the no-hitter has won all but two of those. In other words, when you don't allow a hit over nine innings, you win more than 99% of the time.
Although most World Series have been of the best-of-seven format, the 1919 World Series was a best-of-nine series (along with 1903, 1920, and 1921).
Sensing that an official ruling was necessary as more and more baseball teams were formed, the Knickerbockers decided to form a committee in 1856 to tackle the issue. The desire for more competitive defense won out, and nine innings -- and nine men -- became the standard for good. Why 162 games?
On April 17, 2010, it took 20 innings and nearly seven hours in a game that was scoreless through 18. Both sides went a combined 1-for-25 with runners in scoring position. When the Mets finally crossed home plate in both the 19th and 20th innings, it was against Joe Mather, a position player pressed into pitching.

If someone told you that a team recorded no hits in a baseball game, you would probably -- and reasonably -- assume that team lost said game. Well, on June 28, 2008, the Dodgers beat that Angels despite not recording a single hit in the game.
The most recent major league no-hitter was thrown by Cristian Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero, and Ryan Pressly of the Houston Astros against the Philadelphia Phillies during Game 4 of the World Series on November 2, 2022.
From 1947 to 1964 the Yankees won 15 of 18 AL pennants and 10 World Series, including five in a row from 1949 to 1953. This is the MLB record for most consecutive championships.
From 1998-2000, the dynastic Yankees of Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Joe Torre won three championships in a row. It was the 14th time a team had captured consecutive World Series since the event was first held in 1903, but nobody has managed that feat since.
No team has thrown no-hitters in consecutive games, although it has happened once on consecutive days: On May 5, 1917, Ernie Koob of the St. Louis Browns no-hit the Chicago White Sox, and teammate Bob Groom repeated the feat in the second game of a doubleheader the following day.
The 2011 New York Giants are the only team in NFL history to win a Super Bowl following a 9-7 regular season.
