How does stem stitch look like?
The stem stitch is a traditional outline stitch in hand embroidery. It has a twisted look, which gives this stitch a flowing texture, different than that of the backstitch or split stitch. It is often used for stems in simple embroidery flowers.
Stem stitch, in which each stitch overlaps the previous stitch to one side, forming a twisted line of stitching, with the thread passing below the needle. It is generally used for outlining shapes and for stitching flower stems and tendrils.
Stem stitch is used for fine straight or curved lines and, as the name suggests, it is often used for foliage and stems.
Perfect machine stitches interlock smoothly and look the same on both sides of the fabric. If you see small loops on the right or wrong side, the thread tension isn't correct.

Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the Stem Stitch
Start by inserting the needle at point A and bring the thread up. Turn the needle over and insert the needle from point B to Point C. Note that the point C is the middle point of point A and Point B. 2. Bring the needle up and point C and pull the thread up.

Whipped back stitch makes a heavier line than a back stitch. It gives a similar effect to a stem stitch but a touch finer with the added bonus that it can be stitched in two separate colour threads if required.
When it does this, we call it spitting a stitch. It will feel like a little bump, maybe be a little red, almost like a zit. The the top may open with a little discharge (which looks like a small dab of “pus”- most likely just white blood cells and other things) and you will see a little fishing line sticking out.
