What makes the axel more difficult than the other quads – the flip, toe flip, lutz, salchow, loops and toe loop – is that skaters face forward when they enter the jump, forcing them to complete an extra half revolution. Why is Lutz so hard?
It is a difficult jump because it is counter-rotational, which means that the skater sets it up by twisting in one way and jumping in the other.
The Axel, also known as the Axel Paulsen jump after its creator, is the most difficult one. It is a type of "edge jump," meaning skaters have to skate on one side of the blade when lifting off the ice.
The triple Axel has become a common technical element in the men's singles discipline, while it is still rare among female single skaters. As of 2021, nineteen women have successfully completed the triple Axel in competition.
It's difficult to say how long it will take you to learn an axel as some skaters can learn it in a few weeks, while others take 1-2 years to land it properly.
