It is difficult to compete in the NHL. Most seasons, players are going after each other in 82 regular-season games per year and they may play 20 or more games in the postseason. The games are demanding physical contests and players often play three or four times per week.
Since the 1995–96 season, each team in the NHL plays 82 regular season games, 41 each of home and road.
The first thing to look at is the average games a player has played in the NHL and it is 323 games or given our '70 game' season that would work out to 4.5 seasons.

Virtanen, who averages between six and 15 personal visitors per game, simply tells friends to text his dad if they want tickets, though the NHL's collective bargaining agreement only gives two complimentary seats per player on the home team.
When looking at how many minutes NHL players play, it is most helpful to look at them according to their position. On average, a defenseman will play 20:11 per game and a forward will play 15:37 per game.
As the league continues to get younger, the ice time available to 16-year-olds is on the rise. The league has proven it can develop talent at the rate necessary to get that player to the next level. A fairly long, but manageable game schedule also makes it an attractive option.
