How many pesticides are sprayed per year?
About 1 billion pounds of conventional pesticides are used each year in the United States to control weeds, insects, and other pests.
Over 1 billion pounds of pesticides are used in the United State (US) each year and approximately 5.6 billion pounds are used worldwide (1). In many developing countries programs to control exposures are limited or non-existent.
The global agricultural consumption of pesticides grew mostly steadily from 1990 to 2021. In the latter year, pesticide consumption worldwide stood at nearly 3.54 million metric tons.
In total, we estimate that about 385 million cases of UAPP occur annually world-wide including about 11,000 fatalities.
An average of about 200,000 people die from the toxic exposure of pesticides per year across the world, the United Nations says, calling for tougher global regulation of substances meant to control pests or weeds for plant cultivation.

Pesticides and human health:

Are some pesticides 100% safe?

Pesticides can contaminate soil, water, turf, and other vegetation. In addition to killing insects or weeds, pesticides can be toxic to a host of other organisms including birds, fish, beneficial insects, and non-target plants.
On this basis, we estimate that about 385 million cases of UAPP occur annually world-wide including around 11,000 fatalities. Based on a worldwide farming population of approximately 860 million this means that about 44% of farmers are poisoned by pesticides every year.
Are pesticides harmful to human health? By their nature, pesticides are potentially toxic to other organisms, including humans, and need to be used safely and disposed of properly.
Cotton is often portrayed as a natural fiber that is safe for the skin and does not cause allergies. However, most cotton crops are subjected to chemical spraying, including the use of harmful glyphosate, making such cotton unhealthy and even hazardous to human health.
Signs are related to the nervous system and may include excessive drooling, mild tremors, incoordination, and excitability or depression. More severely affected animals can have severe tremors, seizures, and death caused by respiratory failure.
From its extreme water needs and often heavy use of pesticides, to the cotton farmers who struggle with economic despair and toxic health effects of agrochemicals, it's no wonder cotton is often called the world's 'dirtiest' crop.
Bhutan plans to become the first country in the world to turn its agriculture completely organic, banning the sales of pesticides and herbicides and relying on its own animals and farm waste for fertilisers.
Based on the recommendations of such expert committees and after due consultation with Registration Committee, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has so far banned or phased out 46 pesticides and 4 pesticide formulations for import, manufacture or use in the country.
Why are pesticides bad for bees?
However, many pesticides - including insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides - harm pollinators and other beneficial insects. Their effects include removing important floral resources, causing subtle yet concerning effects on reproduction, navigation and memory and high-profile incidents when pesticides kill bees.

In addition to CNS effects, pesticide exposure can impact a plethora of neurological diseases including, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson's disease, along with cognitive function, and dementia-like diseases like Alzheimer's.
They can be made from natural sources, such as pyrethrin insecticide extracted from certain chrysanthemum plants. Another example is azadirachtin, an extract from the neem tree. Pesticides can also be made synthetically, as in pyrethroids, which control insects as pyrethrins do.
Pesticides can also contaminate our food, harm pollinators, and threaten our ecosystems. Pesticides, specifically neonicotinoids (or neonics), are killing the pollinators we depend on to support our food systems: bees, butterflies, bats, hummingbirds, and more.
