Is One Piece appropriate for children?
It's hilarious, but also has very serious themes such as government corruption and injustice, predjudice and slavery, that might go over very young kids' heads, as well as some other hidden messages that are not explicitly stated in the show.
While One Piece is anything but a children's show, older tweens and up can have a fun romp while watching this gem of a Japanese anime.
One Piece (particularly the manga, which has a bit more blood and violence and such) is far from being just for kids. Its humor and action are easy for most anyone to appreciate, but the more meaningful themes and extensive character development are targeted towards more mature audiences.
Anime seen on the Cartoon Network (or other channels that show children's cartoons) before 9pm is probably safe for most children younger than 13. If it is on after 9pm, then you know it isn't appropriate for children younger than 13.
One Piece is a shonen, which means it's intended audience is 8-18 year-olds. There are parts of the story that touches on slavery, but there are very early episodes that deal with government (mostly marine) corruption.
One Piece is often considered to be an anime that does not cover much in the way of dark themes, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The series covers serious issues such as racism, slavery, and even human experimentation.

Despite being as colorful and cheerful as fans have made it seem, One Piece is actually an incredibly violent and bloody series that revels in blood. What is the cons of One Piece?
The show has a low amount of filler episodes, and, even though it seems like that's a good thing, it means that the show adapts 1 chapter for 1 episode; this makes the show long and boring, as most shows adapt 2–3 chapters per episode. One Piece's pros: I don't know - possibly the action and the story telling.
Basically, 4Kids thought that One Piece was a story meant for children, but soon learned upon starting the adaptation that there was murder, adult themes, and violence throughout it.
Practice of Slavery
Though slavery was prohibited by the World Government over 200 years before the current storyline, it still survives in certain places in the world, the Sabaody Archipelago included. It is implied that the World Government receives bribes in exchange for ignoring the slave trade.
