How do you use a snow pant gaiter?
Boot: The majority of snowboard pants come with boot gaiters. These are built in to the bottom of the pants. Once your boots are on you pull these over the outside of your boot. They cinch around the boot creating a great seal to keep out the elements.

The Difference Between Ski and Snowboard Pants
Snowboard pants tend to be baggier to allow crouching and varied leg movements. The movements of skiing are more subtle and as with the jacket, the slimmer fit allows for a more aerodynamic form. The tighter fit also aids heat retention, trapping air close to the body.
Gaiters are probably the single defining feature most ski and snowboard pants have in common. They're found under the cuff of the pants, and are designed to keep snow out of your boots and lower extremities.
Save your track pants, leggings and other absorbent material pants for underneath your snow pants. Skip the jeans entirely as they are not made of a flexible material and when added with the additional layer of snow pants, they may leave you feeling stiff, impeding your ability to turn and move on the slopes.
Most snow sports brands make leggings that can also be used as base layers. Leggings work very well under your snow pants when you need extra warmth. One of the benefits of leggings is that they are often three-quarter length. Therefore, they work well with ski socks and don't rub your ankles inside your boots.
They should be neither too tight or too loose: a happy medium is always best, although for snowboarders, veering towards a looser fit is recommended due to the extra breadth of movements involved in the sport.
They offer protection from the wind & snow, and limited protection in the event of a fall. Ski pants are usually lined, and this double layer helps to keep the skier's legs warm. The pants are often designed in a baggy style, which gives the skier freedom to move in any direction.
Should you double up socks when skiing?
Wear Only One Pair Socks
Wearing two pairs of ski socks will reduce the breathability of both, resulting in sweaty (and cold) feet. Also, double socks tend to bunch within your boot, which can cause distracting pain and irritation.
Now that we've built the base for your skiing experience, it's time to add new layers to your body. A rule of thumb is that every skier has three layers of clothes on their body. You should follow this rule in every type of weather but make sure that you put on different materials in line with the conditions out there.
Ski bibs don't just protect you when crashing, they also expand your storage options. The pockets on the front of a good pair of bibs, like the Flylow Sphynx bibs aren't just for show. They provide a warm, safe place to keep snacks, your phone, or your wallet dry and easy to find.
Thermal underwear is the only ski pant base layer you should use. Some people may try other options, but they simply do not work in the same way. While it may seem like a good idea to throw on a regular pair of pants, like your everyday sweats or jeans, under your skiing ones, that's a bad idea.
To kick off my week's worth of wearing ski pants to work, I opted for a polished, slightly flared pair from my favorite outdoor brand, Aether. I chose to pair them with a vintage Courrèges sweater, vinyl Courrèges jacket, and a pair of white kitten-heel boots.
A good snowboarding outfit should be comfortable and warm, especially during heavy falls. You can use a hoodie when it's warmer, but it would help if you avoid doing so in chilly weather, especially if the hoodie isn't waterproof. Nonetheless, snowboarding in a hoodie does provide a sense of freedom like no other.
Do not wear cotton socks when snowboarding, as it will almost certainly lead to cold feet. For most, any pair of wool or warm synthetic socks will do the job.
If you have heavily insulated, water-resistant snow pants you may not need a second layer underneath. Sweatpants or yoga pants will do nicely if you have snow pants with little or no insulation. Even if they are high-tech water-resistant and breathable fabric, without insulation they don't provide much warmth.
1. DO NOT TUCK PANTS INTO SKI BOOTS. This should not be mistaken with snowboarders that get the bottom of their pants stuck between the back of their boot and the inside of their hi-back. This is not great but it is forgivable.
If your snow pants have an elastic seal in the cuffs that goes over your boots, you should be OK. Otherwise put on some gaiters. If these conditions are common throughout your hike, don snowshoes and gaiters for the duration.
What does 10k mean in snow pants?
Clothing rated between 5,000 mm and 10,000 mm (10k) is a good choice for riders who spend long days out and ski or snowboard in any weather conditions. Avid skiers and snowboarders, especially those in wetter climates, should look for waterproof ratings in the 10,000 mm to 20,000 mm range or better.
Headbands & Earmuffs
Adorable for building snowmen and winter walks, headbands and earmuffs are just not quite enough to keep your head warm when you're skiing down a mountain. Plus, while fleece headbands may keep your ears cozy, they may also give you ridiculous tan lines.
Snow pants are made to be waterproof and windproof, so they can help you stay dry even when the rain is coming down hard. If you are planning on wearing snow pants in the rain, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, make sure that you choose a pair that is made from a waterproof material.
Layer 1: Always start with a good under-layer such as long underwear or leggings. Layer 2: Add a thick bulky layer like jeans or sweat pants. Optional Layer 3: If you have nylon running pants you can wear them as a top layer to help keep moisture out.
To dress for cold weather, you need three layers to work in concert for maximum warmth: Base layer: Your long underwear needs to keep your skin as dry as possible. Middle layer: Your fleece or puffy jacket needs to hang onto as much body heat as possible.
A good ski base layer – a long-sleeved top plus long-john style pants – is the foundation of every good ski outfit. If yours is made from man-made fibres you need at least two pairs: one to wear and one to wash, as these garments are notoriously whiffy after a couple of days.
But no matter what material is being used, that waterproofing rating is the best indicator of how dry your pants will keep you. We recommend ski and snowboard pants with at least a 10k waterproof rating.
Because winter clothing needs to retain as much heat as possible, the clothing is often tight and insulated. But snowboarders who don't mind experiencing a bit of cold once in a while will wear large warm winter clothing on their bodies, so they don't feel so crammed into their outfit.
Starting with the waist, you'll probably want to size up one size from your usual waist size in trousers. Your best approach is to try a pair of ski pants on while wearing your thermal long johns underneath and make sure you can both sit comfortably and move dynamically without them catching around your waist or hips.
Ideally, you want your ski pants to sit just below your ankle area without spilling over your ski boots and touching the ground. If your ski pants are too long, you can roll them up or have them hemmed. If they are too short, you might need to go out and buy a better pair.
Why do skiers wear their bibs under one arm?
The reason is more function than fashion, according to CBC Olympics snowboarding expert Craig McMorris. "Sometimes those bibs can fly up in your eyes. That's very, very dangerous. So a lot of the riders will tuck it under their arm," McMorris said during the snowboard halfpipe competition.

Stay centred on your skis
The bindings on the skis are usually set a bit back from the middle, so you need to lean forward to get your weight to the middle of the ski, pushing with your shins on the front of the ski boots, this position lets you transmits your inputs to the ski much better.
With your knees at shoulder width apart (moving towards the right) you are going to step out with your right foot, about 30cm (12 inches) then step the left foot. Try not to have your knees move closer than shoulder width apart which will help keep the band under tension.
You only need to lean forwards enough to put your centre of gravity over the middle of the ski. The reason that this has become a myth is that one of the most common mistakes made by people learning to ski, is that they lean back, and that instructors are always telling them to lean forwards.
It might sound counterintuitive, but thin socks with keep your feet much warmer during a day of skiing. Bulky ski socks also tend to bunch up. Those wrinkles can easily reduce circulation to your feet, making them very cold. Gleason personally prefers thin socks made from merino wool.
Wearing everyday leggings for skiing and snowboarding is highly discouraged, even as a layer. Most leggings lack moisture-wicking capabilities. Without this technical feature, leggings trap sweat and moisture inside, which will make the wearer colder and uncomfortable while skiing or snowboarding.
I would recommend wearing the thermals over underwear especially since you probably want to wear them a few days without washing :-) Socks go over the thermals to help keep snow out. Generally you probably want to max out at three layers - a thermal layer, a light ski top or fleece and then a ski jacket.
As such, it's easy for your coat to get bunched up or for your pants to sag as you ride around the mountain. Suspenders are a great way to prevent such issues because they secure your pants and keep them in place. By keeping your pants clipped to your shoulders, you make sure they won't move no matter how fast you ski.
Is it better to wear jeans or sweats in snow?
But in general, sweatpants will be more comfortable to wear in cold weather—weird as it sounds. Sweatpants are made from cotton or a cotton-polyester blend. The inner and fuzzy soft part of sweatpants is a polyester type of fiber that is extra warm and retains heat better than denim.
The big thing to avoid with base layers is cotton. Cotton doesn't wick moisture away from you, instead it just lets that moisture sit on your skin and make you cold. So look for wicking long johns and a long sleeved top.
Thermal leggings that are made from lightweight merino wool are ideal for high intensity activities. Look for that which provides comfort, support, breathability, mobility, and stretches without friction. Capri leggings might be a good option if you are looking to have a great fit with your ski or snowboard boots.
Wear Bright Colors
It is easy to get lost in the all white snow. Wearing a neutral color, you might blend right in. Wear a pop of color.
As a general rule, bulky clothing, including winter coats and snowsuits, should not be worn underneath the harness of a car seat. In a car crash, fluffy padding in a coat immediately flattens out from the force, leaving extra space under the harness. A child can then slip through the straps and be thrown from the seat.
The answer is that they should go underneath waterproofs, but over your non-waterproof walking trousers which are underneath the waterproofs. If a gaiter is over your waterproofs, rain will run down your trousers and into the top of the gaiter (no matter how tight you pull the draw-string, it's not a watertight seal).
Waterproof: Gaiters for mountaineering and snowsports are typically made with a waterproof, breathable material to keep moisture from snow and glaciers out of your boots. If you'll be tromping through wet or snowy conditions, look for waterproof gaiters.

The best neck warmer for skiing is one made from breathable materials that are lightweight and have moisture-wicking properties.
