If the grid is not available, a quick approximation of stitches can be found with this simple equation: Multiply the length by the width then multiply of 2. That will give you the amount of 1,000 stitches. For example: 11/2” x 2” logo would be 1.5 x 2 = 3 then 3 x 2 = 6.
For embroidery, the best choice of unit is stitch count. For example, your machine can produce from 20,000 to 30,000 stitches per hour, which means for 20,000 to 30,000, it costs $20.67; so, for 1000 stitches, it cost between $0.68 to $1.03. Now, this should be your standard pricing per 1000 stitches.

Common Machine Embroidery Hoop Sizes
There are three common sizes of embroidery hoops: 4 x 4, 5 x 7 and 6 x 10 inches.
For a normal crest size embroidery we typically size the logo 3.5”-5”. The smallest text size is usually an indicator as to the overall length of an embroidered logo. Typically we can do lettering no smaller than one eighth of an inch in height. That does depend on the type of material it is being sewn onto also.
Usually 8 to 10 spi is adequate to provide adequate seam strength and at the same time allow for quicker cycle times . More stitches per inch will help minimize seam grinning. Due to many of the operations being lockstitch, usually 10 – 12 spi is required to provide adequate seam strength.
As a rule of thumb, thread usage per 1,000 stitches is: upper threads approximately 5 m, bobbin threads approx. 3-3,5 m.
Average – 6 stitches per inch. Accomplished – 8 stitches per inch. Expert – 10 stitches per inch. Professional – 12 stitches per inch.
It takes about 10 minutes to embroider a logo on a shirt with a machine that has the right speed and design size. A thread count of 100 or higher is ideal because it results in a sturdy garment, but you can go as low as 50 if you want less bulkiness.
The standard speed at which most embroidery machines work is between 600 to 700 stitches per minute (spm). Most machines can go up to higher speeds, sometimes exceeding 1,200 spm, but as we've mentioned, going fast can cause many more problems.
To check how many stitches your row has, you'll count all the bars in one row, from left to right. You can count either the top half, or bottom half of your wave-like ridge. Be careful when counting the stitches on the edge of your piece.

The ideal image is 280 x 200 pixels. Though not ideal, your image can be smaller than 280 x 200 pixels or greater than 1400 x 1000 pixels. This may impact the quality of the logo on your documentation. The ideal aspect ratio for business logos is 1.4, though it can be between 1 and 1.8.
One general rule of thumb is that if the cut is more than half an inch deep, it will probably need stitches. However, there are other factors to consider as well, such as the location of the cut and whether it is jagged or clean.
2 - 3 mm --> Most sewing is done in the 2-3 mm length range. This range is common for construction sewing, machine quilting, edge stitching and understitching. 3 - 4 mm --> A 3 - 4 mm straight stitch is commonly used for topstitching. Shorter on lighter weight fabrics, and longer on medium or heavyweight fabric.
To go the opposite direction, if a pattern requests 10 stitches per inch, divide 25.4 by 10 to get the millimeter setting of 2.5.
Across the 3 major brands I checked, the standard tension you need is 4, and the standard stitch length is 2.5mm. This is a good starting point for medium weight cottons like poplin and shirting. Choose a shorter stitch length between 1.8 – 2.5mm for lightweight cotton (eg. voile).
