First Line
When it comes to top lines, Johnny Gaudreau-Elias Lindholm-Matthew Tkachuk is one of the best. First, this trio gets credit for longevity -- no line has played as much time together this season than their ~478 5-on-5 minutes. Then, of course, there's what they do in that time together.

In early January, head coach Bruce Cassidy mixed up Boston's offensive lines in search of a spark to the team's slow start to the season. The lines in hockey refer to the different lineups that teams utilize throughout the game. Each line typically consists of three forwards, a center and two wingers on either side of the center, and two defensemen. Usually, teams field four lines of forwards and three lines of defensemen.
The third line is often called the checking line, and is generally made up of more defensively oriented forwards. This line is often played against an opponent's first or second lines in an effort to reduce their scoring, and physically wear them down.
Can you substitute in icing hockey?
In some junior leagues (such as the WHL), the offending team is permitted to substitute players after an icing only if the puck was shot from the neutral zone (between the defensive blue line and the red line). If the violation occurs in the defensive zone, substitution is prohibited.
