All guard members need a completed DD Form 368, which is a request for conditional release from their U.S. National Guard unit. This form covers aspects of your transfer, such as acknowledging your wish to transfer and your unit's approval of that transfer.
Active duty is a better option for those looking for a secure full-time job with numerous benefits. Reserve duty is a better option for those wishing to serve their country, build career skills, earn extra money, and access military benefits without making a full-time commitment.
The Guard is generally called up to respond to state-level emergencies, such as natural disasters. But, unlike most of the other military forces, it can also serve a domestic law enforcement role. Additionally, it can serve missions overseas, which it has done more frequently in recent years.
Although they are “part-time” warriors, members of the National Guard still make a big commitment when they enlist, which includes agreeing to deploy for missions at home and abroad. Typically, domestic deployments can last up to 60 days while overseas deployments can last up to a year.
If you are serving as a member of the Army or Air National Guard, you are eligible for regular drill pay, and might qualify for some special pays. If you are placed on active duty your pay will change from Drill Pay to the same monthly pay structure as your active duty counterparts.
The full National Guard service term is eight years. However, we offer several active service options within that time frame. For example, your child can commit to just three active years then enter IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) for the remainder of their term.
