What pen to use for hand embroidery?
The FriXion pens actually did the best in this trial. Equally as good are the green and orange Flair pens- just like last time. The red Flair pen also did quite well.
- Chalk Pencils or Markers.

- Tracing Paper or Carbon Paper.

Use a pen, pencil, or stylus to trace over. Make sure you have a nice hard surface underneath. Practice on a piece of scrap paper to experiment with the amount of pressure needed to transfer the pigment. I find that it is necessary to press quite hard.
As a rule, natural woven fabrics are usually best for hand embroidery techniques. Choose from cotton, wool, linen or silk for your background and select the appropriate thread-count for your technique and threads you are using.
Abstract: Most Crayola Washable Marker colors wash out of fabric with an hour or two of soaking. The violet marker was the most stubborn. Overnight soaking removed all marks. These washable markers may be suitable to use for marking embroidery and quilting patterns.

Good old fashioned masking tape Tape your design onto a window and tape another blank piece of paper or fabric over it. Trace with a pencil, fine liner, frixion pen or water erasable fabric marking pen. Make sure that it is well taped otherwise it will move.
A water erasable or chalk pencil is the best choice, as the marks will remain until you are ready to remove them. An air erasable pen will disappear too quickly, while iron-on transfer pencil marks are permanent.
Pens, markers & chalk for embroidery pattern transfer
Frixion ball pens disappear when you apply heat (like a hairdryer or ironing). Tailor's chalk is also available as a chalk pen. It disappears quite quickly because it's only attached to the surface. Chalk is the easiest to remove permanently.
Does embroidery have to be done by hand?

Personally I'd use Sharpie or re-embroider by hand over the existing eye. I've used Bic permanent fabric markers successfully, but I use polyester thread. Just be careful that the color doesn't bleed into some other part! I use fine point Sharpie markers often on both rayon or poly thread.

Can you use permanent pens on fabric?
When using permanent marker on fabric, opt for a 100% natural fiber fabric, such as cotton or linen. Natural fibers absorb the ink better than synthetic fibers, such as polyester. 1 Also, in addition to permanent markers, fabric markers are a good choice because they're designed to hold up to many washings.
Because ink is designed to stay on whatever surface you apply it to, when pen marks stain clothing and fabric, machine washing won't be enough to get the stain out. Instead, you need to use a special stain pretreating technique prior to machine washing, starting with clear alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel.
Is Sharpie permanent on clothing? Well, Sharpies are intended to be permanent markers, but the reality is the marks do fade somewhat with frequent washing. If spot-treated using our methods we've outlined, Sharpie marks really don't stand a chance!
