What temperature are NHL pucks?
The average NHL puck is kept at a temperature between minus-10 and minus-7 Celsius before it hits the ice in a game. Everyone knows that a frozen puck slides smoother and faster. Once it's out of the freezer and in play, though, it's much more difficult to tell how quickly a puck has thawed.
They glide smoother and faster when frozen, and freezing eliminates bouncing. Since pucks are made of vulcanized rubber, they tend to bounce like tennis balls when smacked with a stick. As a result, games played with warm pucks look a lot like the game of hurling from which hockey descended.
The Pucks Stops Here
On average, as many as 80 rubber pucks are needed for an Olympic event. Moreover, before each hockey game, the pucks must be frozen in order to reduce friction and limit rebounds off the ice's surface.
Does the temperature of a hockey puck affect how far it will travel? Both pucks will travel the same distance across the ice, but the warmer puck will bounce further and can therefore cover more of the ice with the same force.
Pucks are typically stored at around 14 degrees Fahrenheit in a small freezer within the penalty box area. Typically, 15-20 are used in a game. Between whistles the linesman may head over to the penalty box for a replacement puck from the freezer.
Have you ever wondered why teams freeze hockey pucks prior to games. Well, it turns out that it comes down to keeping pucks from bouncing around on the ice.
How Much do Hockey Pucks Cost? One thing that is helpful about puck is they are very cheap. With the number of hockey pucks players go through, it is no wonder that factories are making hundreds of thousands of pucks every single year. Hockey pucks cost $1.50 for a regulation, 6 oz.
The main reason hockey pucks are black is that it's the easiest color to see on the white ice surface hockey is played on.
In fact, NHL pucks are used for no more than 2-3 minutes on average before they are replaced. The warmer the puck, the softer it will be and the more likely it is to chip.
