Why did the Heat retire MJ's number?
Many don't understand why the Heat decided to hang MJ's No. 23 in the rafters, even though he never played for them. Riley explained it was made as a sign of respect of what Jordan has done for the game.
In celebration of our 35th anniversary this season, we will officially retire jersey #32 in honor of Shaquille O'Neal during a postgame ceremony on Tuesday, February 13.
The Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat retired the number 23 in honor of Michael Jordan. Jordan never played for the Miami Heat. Jordan is one of the 14 people to have a number retired by two different teams.

James wore No. 23 in high school and when he joined the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. When he joined the Miami Heat in 2010, he switched to No. 6, stating at the time of his decision that it was in honor of Michael Jordan.
In the summer before moving to Orlando, he spent time in Los Angeles under the tutelage of Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. O'Neal wore number 32 because Terry Catledge refused to relinquish the 33 jersey.
Shaq wore 33 in college, then was 32 for the Magic because another player had 33. Lakers 32 and 33 were already retired and Heat 33 was Mourning. Suns 33 was retired so he wore 32 then. He finally wore 33 for the Cavs but then in Boston, 32 and 33 were retired and 34 taken.
According to Rich Paul, friend and former agent of 'King James', "LeBron's decision was out of respect for Bill Russell". LeBron was among the last players in the NBA to wear the number 6, after the league retired the number 6 in memory of Bill Russell, who died in the summer of 2022 at the age of 88.
Nevertheless, James has decided to make the change back to No. 23 out of respect for Bill Russell, according to his agent. LeBron James had hinted to ESPN in September that he was considering a jersey number change after the 2022-23 season.
The Heat didn't have any obligation to perform this historic gesture. MJ never played for the franchise, and his jersey number didn't need to be retired. However, the team respected Jordan so much that they felt compelled to do so.
