3 Tips for Preventing Athlete’s Foot — Fit Feet For Life (2024)

The itchiness, redness, peeling and burning skin that is caused by an athlete’s foot fungal infection is definitely something to be avoided. Fortunately, there are some precautions you can take to keep your feet healthy and avoid this unsightly infection. The fungi that propagate and cause this condition are pretty much everywhere, but you can take steps to limit your contact.

3 tips to keep athlete's foot under control include the following:

  1. Let your feet breathe - Allow your feet plenty of air circulation every day by taking off your shoes and socks and airing them out. Wear shoes made of breathable fabrics like leather, canvas and Goretex.
  2. Keep your feet dry - Many individuals are susceptible to excessively sweaty feet known as hyperhidrosis, but for other people having very sweaty feet is normal. If you are prone to excessive sweating of your feet it’s important to keep fungi under control with antifungal spray or powder that you can use in your shoes and on your feet. Cornstarch and baking soda are also good, more natural options.
  3. Protect your feet - Never share shoes, socks, or towels with others. If someone in your family has the infection, be sure to avoid coming into contact with the fungi by keeping the shower area clean and by wearing clean socks and dry footwear every day. Wash your feet daily with warm water and soap and make sure to dry carefully, especially between the toes.
