Bill PannellLimacharlie48Regular poster120 posts Bill PannellLimacharlie48Regular poster Yes Andre, I have used 99% with no ill effects in the past, but it has been a bit. Scalecoat II stripper has been awesome, though pricey. I filter the stripper back into its original container getting 90+% back, reducing the cost. Bill Reply00
Mark R.Regular poster293 posts Mark R.Regular poster Water The only difference is that the 99% contains less water, and hence, is stronger (which you want). Most people use the 91% because the 99% is usually not easy to find. Mark.

It wasn't much more expensive (at that time, anyway) than the 91% stuff. Al Carter, Mount Vernon, WA Reply00

eastwindSuper User3,535 posts eastwindSuper User 99% IPA -> 91% IPA. If I've figured it right, you can add 87.9 mcl of distilled water to a litre of 99% IPA to get 1.0879L of 91% IPA. You can call me EW. Here's my blog index Reply00
joefMRH Founder17,325 posts joefMRH Founder Denatured alcohol is not IPA Quote: I've used denatured alcohol. Can be had a hardware stores and the big box stores by the gallon in the U.S.A. Just for the record, denatured alcohol is ethyl alcohol (the stuff you drink) with additives to make it not drinkable, and it's not the same as isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Joe Fugate Reply00

blindog10Prolific poster3,295 posts blindog10Prolific poster EA doesn't work Ethyl Alcohol does not dissolve most paint used on model trains since 1990. You need isopropyl alcohol in a concentration of at least 91%. 70%, common rubbing alcohol, will not work. And you need to keep your 91%+ isopropyl in a closed container. At that concentration it is hydroscopic, meaning it will absorb water out of the air and turn itself into 70%, which is roughly the point it stops being hydroscopic. Most commercially available "denatured alcohol" is ethanol (grain alcohol) cut with methanol (wood alcohol), which is toxic to humans, although it won't usually hurt your models. Some industrial denatured alcohol is ethanol cut with gasoline, which will hurt your plastic models. Scott Chatfield Reply00
lamingSuper User3,956 posts lamingSuper User Update Brought home a gallon of "Industrial Grade Isopropanol" that was sold to me as 99% (even though I see no % indication on the jug) at the regional wholesale solvents dealer. It may or may not work as a stripping agent, but it was less than half price of what was available online, so I suckered-in. I did at least expect it to indicate "99%" on the jug somewhere, but the labeling is definitely "industrial grade" and not meant for the shelves of a retail outlet. SO... it remains to be seen just exactly what I've purchased! Andre Kansas City & Gulf: Ozark Subdivision, Autumn of 1964 The "Mainline To The Gulf!" Reply00
