Lake Forest-based Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies has been bought by Douglas Acquisitions, a private equity firm in Northern California.
Douglas has a portfolio of automotive investments, including transportation design, engineer and manufacturer KSR International Inc.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Quantum filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March.
In April, the company announced it would lay off 110 employees in a filing with the state.
Quantum makes energy-efficient natural gas and hydrogen tanks.
The company’s first big project was hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for General Motors. Quantum lost more than three quarters of its revenue in 2009 when General Motors went bankrupt, the company previously told the Register.

Neither company immediately returned requests for comment on how remaining Lake Forest employees would be affected.
