Posts: 5,511 Threads: 38 Joined: Nov 2019 I haven't bought a lot of new games in a while..... but every time I see either of these I kind of want to try one of them out. So the simple question is which one would ya'll recommend? I've loved Pins CK3 write ups, but I 100% would try at a low difficulty probably for either game. Posts: 2,840 Threads: 15 Joined: Apr 2020 I've always heard that CK2 (or 3) is an RPG masquerading as grand strategy, while EU4 actually is grand strategy. So if you're more into the stories the game creates, and getting invested into characters,CK3 is probably the way. And if you're more into map painting and optimising an empire civ-style, EU4 is probably the way. I've only played EU3 and CK2 though, and both were a long time ago. I'm more of a Crusader Kings kind of person, but each game has it's fans. Edit: CK3 also has some pretty amazing overhaul mods, if you're into that. Like this Lord of the Rings mod. Past Games: PB51 -PB55 -PB56 - PB58(Tarkeel's game) - PB59 - PB60 -PB64 - PB66 - PB68 (Miguelito's game) Current Games: None (for now...) January 21st, 2022, 23:46 ![CK3 vs EU4 which one? Posts: 2,605 Threads: 31 Joined: Jan 2014 EU4 has one hell of a learning curve, depending on the amount of dlc's you get. If you've never played CK2 or any other Paradox grand strategy I'd recommend starting with CK3. Personally I prefer EU4, I think it's fantastic, but even trying to imagine learning it from scratch gives me a headache. January 22nd, 2022, 00:02 ![CK3 vs EU4 which one? (7) CK3 vs EU4 which one? Posts: 856 Threads: 8 Joined: Nov 2021 Ditto what Amica said. I know this isn’t what you asked for but I have to jump in and recommed my absolute favorite PDX game, Stellaris. It’s so thematically rich and there are some good mods that make the AI stronger if you want a more challenging experience. The problem with it is that you need a couple of the DLCs, and the only way to get them at a reasonable price is to buy codes for them from a site like Eneba January 22nd, 2022, 01:49 ![CK3 vs EU4 which one? Posts: 8,293 Threads: 83 Joined: Oct 2009 Base CK2 is free these days, you could just try it out. Also I wouldn't worry about difficulty, seeing as there's no way to win a game. It is in fact more fun when things go south. January 22nd, 2022, 12:23 ![CK3 vs EU4 which one? (11) CK3 vs EU4 which one? Posts: 484 Threads: 3 Joined: Feb 2013 Have you played any of PDX games before? If no, CK3 is probably your best bet. I skipped EU4 because I saw the game as going in a direction I wasn't fan of and haven't changed my mind since. CK3 on the other hand... Vast improvements from CK2 and years of development ahead. It's a sweet game that lets you do a lot more than base CK2 but since CK2 is free you might want to just dip your toes into it to figure out what kind of a game it is because it is pretty damn original. And fun. Yeah, I'm not happy about my past behaviour either. ![CK3 vs EU4 which one? (13) CK3 vs EU4 which one? Posts: 16,682 Threads: 74 Joined: Nov 2005 I love them both but people are right that they're different games. Eu4 is the grand strategy, conquer the world (well, if you're a masoch*st) kind of game. Ck3 is more about characters and families but you can blob and conquer if you like. It just isn't really as fun to conquer for conquering sake imo Dodo Tier Player January 30th, 2022, 21:46 ![CK3 vs EU4 which one? (16) CK3 vs EU4 which one? Posts: 2,946 Threads: 19 Joined: Mar 2012 Recently started getting into CK2, and what really helped me were searching up a beginner's guide on Youtube, and playing as an Irish ruler in the 1066 start. You start tiny, meaning that you don't get overwhelmed with complexity. Your with neighbors that are usually of equal power or weaker than you. The big powers (mostly England) usually leave you alone. There's an obvious initial goal: unify Ireland, and achieving it will give the basics of warfare. And later down the line, the special Tanistry succession means it's pretty simple to keep your realm in one piece, instead of it all splintering upon your ruler's death. All in all, it's a safe, forgiving situation. More people have been to Berlin than I have.

FAQs
They're very different. It really depends on what era you're into and what type of mechanics you enjoy. CK3 takes place in the middle ages and is the easiest Paradox game to learn and play, so it's good for beginners. You play as a person instead of a country and your dynasty is important.
Is Victoria 3 easier than CK3? ›
I would rate Vic 3 as about the difficulty to learn as CK3. By its nature, CK3 has more hidden features and less transparent information.
Is Europa Universalis 4 better than Crusader Kings 2? ›
Both are great games. CK2 is harder to get into and focuses more on roleplay while EU4 is more focused on war and conquering the world. Eu4 is overall more popular but the forum is more negative towards it as the last 2-3 DLCs havent been all that great. What you should buy depends on what you like.
Is CK3 easy to get into? ›
Crusader Kings 3 is considered one of the best grand strategy games ever made, with a vast number of things for players to accomplish. Newcomers to the game should start with easier rulers to learn the mechanics before moving on to more complex kingdoms and dynasties.
Why is EU4 so slow? ›
Mostly because it uses 1 core for most calculations. The engine is outdaded. It's not trivial to spread calculations over multiple cores (or even threads).
What is the hardest nation to play as in EU4? ›
Often cited as a classic example of a challenging nation in Europa Universalis 4 gameplay, Karabakh begins as a vassal of Qara Qoyunlu. Should players want any hope of expanding into its neighboring regions, Karabakh should secure support for its independence or risk being diplomatically annexed.
Does CK3 ever end? ›
Players begin as a character in either 867 or 1066. Upon the death or deposition of a player's character they continue to play as that character's heir. Overall, players develop a dynasty over the centuries, with the game ending in 1453.
Does CK3 go on forever? ›
Game "ends" in 1453 but you can set game options to "no end date" when creating a new game. Then the game will continue forever after 1453, just that history and historic events will "stop" at that point.
Is Crusader Kings 3 AAA? ›
Paradox Interactive is the leading Swedish game developer and publisher behind some of the most iconic games in the market today; from Stellaris to Cities: Skylines to Crusader Kings III. Game development for AAA studios is a complex process that involves hundreds of stakeholders and multi-year-long development cycles.
Is Europa Universalis still good? ›
With its profound strategic elements, expansive game world, and continuous updates, this game offers an excellent choice for history enthusiasts and strategy aficionados.
However, there is a big difference in the learning curve, as the overall pacing differs, so in a way EU4 is more friendly to beginners. In a nutshell, I'd say it's easier to learn but harder to master, you just have to play it with a different mindset.

Is Crusader Kings 3 like EU4? ›
The EU series predates Crusader Kings. EU has always been about the long-term story of your nation--its expansion, technology, diplomacy, warfare, and so on. To make Crusader Kings different, not just "early EU," they focused on the dynasties themselves. So EU4 has almost nothing of what you described from CK3.
