Solution

Alkenes are the unsaturated hydrocarbon that contains one double in their structure.

For the preparation of alkenes following two methods are used:

  1. Dehydration: Industrially prepared
  2. Dehydrohalogenation

Dehydration: Industrial preparation

Reactant used: Ethanol(C2H5OH), Alumina(Al2O3)

  1. In this reaction when Ethanol vapours are passed through a tube that contains Alumina at a temperature of 300C then Ethene is formed as the major product.
  2. The chemical reaction occurs as follows:C2H5OH(l)(Ethanol)350CAl2O3C2H4(g)(Ethene)+H2O(l)

Dehydrohalogenation:

Reactant used: Chloroethane(C2H5Cl), Alcoholic (KOH)

  1. In this reaction when Chloroethane is treated with an Alcoholic Potassium hydroxide then we get Ethene as the major product.
  2. The alcoholic Potassium hydroxide used here is hot and concentrated in nature.
  3. In this reaction Potassium chloride and water is also formed.
  4. The chemical reaction is as follows:(C2H5Cl)(g)(Chloroethane)+KOH(s)(Potassiumhydroxide)C2H4(g)(Ethene)+H2O(l)+KCl(s)(Potassiumchloride)

Hence, we successfully get Ethene as the major product by the use of two methods.

FAQs

How can you prepare alkenes? Give any two methods of preparations of alkenes with equations.? ›

Alkenes are generally prepared through β elimination reactions, in which two atoms on adjacent carbon atoms are removed, resulting in the formation of a double bond. Preparations include the dehydration of alcohols, the dehydrohalogenation of alkyl halides, and the dehalogenation of alkanes.

What are the two methods of preparing alkenes? ›

For the preparation of alkenes following two methods are used:
  • Dehydration: Industrially prepared.
  • Dehydrohalogenation.

What are the two methods for preparation of alkanes? ›

There are two ways to prepare alkanes through alkyl halides. Firstly, through reduction with dilute hydrochloric acid and zinc. Another one is called the Wurtz reaction.

What are the two ways of synthesizing alkenes? ›

  • 10.1. 1 Dehydrohalogenation of Alkyl Halide. The E2 elimination reaction of alkyl halide is one of the most useful method for synthesizing alkene. ...
  • 10.1. 2 Dehydration of Alcohol. Other than alkyl halides, alcohols can also be the substrates for elimination to produce alkenes.

What method is used to make alkenes from alkanes? ›

The most common method of making alkenes from alkanes is by halogenation-dehydrohalogenation.

What are the two reaction of alkenes? ›

In an addition reaction an alkene adds elements to each of the carbons involved in the π-bond, resulting in formation of sp3 carbons from sp2 carbons. This is one of the most important types of reactions that alkenes undergo. Another important type of reaction involving alkenes is oxidative cleavage.

What are the two 2 test that can be conducted to differentiate alkane and alkene? ›

1 Answer. (a) (i) Test with bromine water or CCl4 Alkenes react with bromine water of CCl4 to form dibromo alkane, Where as alkanes do not show such rection. (ii) Test with alkaline. KMnO4 or Baeyer's reagent test: Alkenes react with Baeyer's reagent to produce glycol, Where as alkenes do not show such reaction.

What are the two basic chemical reactions for alkanes? ›

Alkanes undergo so few reactions that they are sometimes called paraffins, from the Latin parum affinis, meaning “l*ttle affinity.” However, heat or light can initiate the breaking of C–H or C–C single bonds in reactions called combustion and halogenation.

What are the 2 major sources of alkanes? ›

The most important sources for alkanes are oil and natural gas. Oil is a mixture of liquid alkanes and other hydrocarbons.

What are the two examples of alkenes? ›

Examples Alkene Uses

Ethene C 2 H 4 and propene C 3 H 6 are small alkene molecules that are widely used in the polymers industry. Most specifically, in the production of the primary ingredients of plastics, like polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

What are the first 2 alkenes? ›

The first two alkenes in Table 13.1. 1, ethene and propene, are most often called by their common names—ethylene and propylene, respectively (Figure 13.1. 1). Ethylene is a major commercial chemical.

What are 2 naturally occurring alkenes? ›

Other alkenes that occur in nature include 1-octene, a constituent of lemon oil, and octadecene (C 18H 36) found in fish liver.

What is the formula for making alkene? ›

Example: Ethene ( C 2 H 4 ) is an alkene having the formula is ( C 2 H 2 x 2 ) . Q. The molecules of alkene family are represented by a general formula CnH2n.

What method is used to test for alkenes? ›

Bromine water is an orange solution of bromine. It becomes colourless when it is shaken with an alkene. Alkenes can decolourise bromine water, but alkanes cannot.

What are the two types of reaction alkenes can undergo? ›

The most common reactions of alkenes include addition reactions , elimination reactions , and oxidation reactions . Addition reactions involve the addition of atoms or groups of atoms to the carbon - carbon double bond , resulting in the formation of a single bond .

What two solutions can we use to test for alkenes? ›

You can use bromine water, which is an orange solution, to distinguish between alkanes and alkenes. Image caption, There is no change when bromine water is mixed with an alkane, but it turns colourless when mixed with an alkene.

What are the two sources of alkenes? ›

The main sources of alkenes are oil and natural gas. Benzene is a type of aromatic compound/ unsaturated hydrocarbon with chemical formula C 6 H 6 . It can be prepared by natural process as well as human activities. It can be obtained by crude oil, cigarette smoke as well as gasoline.
