How to Choose a Suitable Skateboard Deck... And What Not to Do? ›

If you buy a deck that is too wide for your height and shoe size, you will need to exert more power, which can make skateboarding and trick riding difficult. If you choose a board that is too narrow for your height and shoe size, you'll have trouble balancing and won't feel stable.

Some things to keep in mind, especially if you are choosing between different skateboard deck sizes. A larger or wider deck will be more stable and comfortable for riding, while a smaller or skinnier deck will be more nimble for flip tricks, ledges, and technical skating.

For beginners, we recommend you pick a skateboard based on your age and height. If you're under 10 years old or under 5ft tall then we recommend a Junior sized skateboard, if you're over 10 years old or over 5ft then you'll be suited to a full-sized skateboard.

Here's a list of heights to skateboard sizes that you should consider: 4ft 6in or shorter: 7.25” to 7.75” board size. 4ft 6in to 5ft 6 in: 7.75” to 8.00” board size. 5ft 6 inch or taller: 8.00” to 8.50”

Skateboard decks are usually distinguished between low, medium, or high concave. You can decide which level is most comfortable for you by trial and error. We'd recommend beginners to start with a medium concave skateboard deck.

Different types of practice. It goes without saying, if you ride several times a week, you will wear it out much faster than if you only use it every other weekend. A skateboard deck can therefore last between a few days for some riders, against several months for others.

Additional Info: Industry standard boards typically consist of 7 or 9 plies of hard maple wood laminated together and pressed into whatever concavous shape makes skateboarders happy.

Smaller Boards i.e. 7.75", 8.0", 8.138" are better for flip tricks. The smaller size will make flip tricks easier, because the board can get around faster, giving you more time to catch the board and land the trick.

The most common setup is for the truck axle to be approximately the same width as your deck – this setup offers the most stability. Generally speaking, go with an axle that is just greater or less than 1/4" the width of the board.
