Mine is "yeah whatever, stop showing off". But I still usually reply "gg" anyways...

Is that the right thing to do? Or should I be honest?

I sometimes say "great game" in a vain hope that they appreciate they're not talking to a teenager, but an adult.

My response to "gg" is normally a "same to you". However I do realize that "gg" is only used to lighten the sting of a loss, but in reality it only makes things worse, especially if the loss is with in say 15 moves. How would that be deemed a good game.My idea of a good game is one that could go either way for each opponent.I have yet to respond "gg" to an opponent. My preferenceis "thanks for the game".

Recently, I was playing someone, and getting beat, in turn-based. My opponent asked if I minded if he wrote comments on what he thought of the moves, while we were playing. I said, I didn't mind. He then writes, after one of my moves, that it was a horrible move, and proceeds to criticize my play in general.

Of course, this is only the most recent of many times this has happened to me; having my opponent criticize my play while I play. So I think I am quite hardened from being sensitive to a mere "gg", after I loseIf Someone Says GG after They Win a Game, What Is Your Usual Reaction - Chess Forums (7)

Off Topic:

Phew!

(Just checked our game notes.... wasn't me)

On a more serious note, I do criticize some opponent's play whilst it is occurring. I figure that anyone playing 600-1000 points out of their league must be doing so to gain some insight from the stronger player. When I was learning to play (OTB in those days) the stronger player would usually help out the weaker player with useful comments and observations. Obviously, if I detect any frost from the other side of the board, I desist (unless you're on my trash-talk list, in which case, I really rub it in).

I don't think you should say anything if the game has meaning (tournament, team match etc.) or if the other guy is within (say) 500 points of your rating.

On topic:

Personally, I only type "gg" if it was a good game i.e. closely fought and interesting.

Its sad that so many cant grasp the concept of "good game" and or are just convinced there opponent is making fun of them.

yeah, but after readding enough of these threads i have started saying "thanks for the game" instead. of course, i am sure there are some people who would think that i am saying "thanks for being horrible and giving me such an easy adjustmment to my ratings points".

If they are from a country which is poorer then the your country you can ask them what´s it´s like to crawl in dirt and die from a simple influenza virus.

Quite handy for Dutch people since there aren´t many countries that have better health care or lower unemployment rate so you can insult about everybody by doing that.

Quite right, in the full spectrum of abuse "gg", even if intended as such, is a long way from some of the more colourful stuff that most intenet chess players experience.

When I'm on the end of a solid beating and the other guy types "gg", I just think he's a bit cheeky.

By this I assume r-frog-one means he eschews the texting shorthand which I do for pretty much for the same reason I suppose. "Good (or great) game" isn't too much to type out. As for the winner giving me a "good game" (or "gg"), sometimes when it's clearly not deserved, I'm fine with that. Unless it's followed up with an epithet (like "loser" which it never is), I figure my opponent is just being courteous which I appreciate.

I usually don't offer a gg unless in response to an opponent's, but if I've played a series of games against the same opponent (in Live) then I'll usually sign off with "ggs, thanks" or something along those lines. Sometimes I'll give a gg if I genuinely thought it merited it, but then only if it was a close game, or if I've just been completely outplayed.

A ritual we're trained to perform since childhood. Generally a good thing, I think, but it seems meaningless for internet chess. "Thanks for the game" works better. If it actually was a good game an applicable interesting comment is preferred. Example: "Nice bongcloud dued!" or "The move 21. a3 really set up some nice tactics and turned the tide!" Get it? A mindless "gg" is boring and pretty useless, we might as well be children slapping hands on a t-ball field.

I have always equated "gg" as theonline version of a hand shake. My usual response no matter how the game went... is the same. Too many people I think just read too much into "gg" whenasimpleamiable message was all that was intended.

FAQs

What to reply when someone says GG? ›

Yes, I agree that wishing for "good game" for both players is the appropriate response. The "you too" response usually comes out of politeness or habit, rather than a genuine response.

Does GG mean get good or good game? ›

GG stands for Good Game. GG is an internet slang initialism used to acknowledge a winner's skill in multiplayer video games.

What does the winner say when he wins the chess game? ›

You say “Checkmate” (only if you have a checkmate.) You say “Thanks for the game” ALWAYS.

What to say after winning chess? ›

A "Thank you" Is more than enough. Regardless if you won or lost. I usually thank my opponent for playing, win or lose. It is just a game.

What does GG mean to a girl? ›

The GG Slang is usually used in a text, and sometimes it is sexually explicit slang for "Game and Giving." It means that the partner was great in bed. For example, if someone says GG after their partner has fallen asleep and their partner wakes up and says "GG?" then all of those things can be taken as sexual innuendo.

Is GG a good thing to say? ›

Often sent in chat groups, a pithy “GG” acknowledges that the game played was either good, fair, or both. Saying “GG” is also a display of sportsmanship, 2022 research from Indonesia notes. It's like a ritualistic handshake at the end of a match well played, especially a close one.

Why do winners say GG? ›

It's called sportsmanship. Humble in victory, gracious in defeat. Good manners cost nothing and if someone says GG after a one-sided game that is because they are being genuinely respectful or just out of habit.

Why do people say GG when they win? ›

GG means Good Game, so that means the game was played well, the match was good, it was exciting and fun, but what i see instead is a game where one player has two bots and the other team has a full team.

Why do guys say GG? ›

In the world of gaming, "GG" stands for "good game." It is a commonly used phrase at the end of a match or game to show sportsmanship and respect to the opponents, regardless of whether the match was won or lost.

What is the final word in chess? ›

Checkmate. Perhaps the most common of all terms of chess is a 'checkmate' when a chess player can corner the rival king completely. The rival king is deemed captured when this happens, and the game ends.

What is luck in chess? ›

Luck doesn't play a factor in chess, at all. Life and human error play a factor when it comes to things outside chess. If your opponent gets struck by a meteor during a chess game, that could be considered 'luck'. If your opponent, misclicks, that's Human error.

What happens if you say checkmate? ›

Checkmating the opponent wins the game. Black is checkmated and loses the game. In chess, the king is never actually captured—the player loses as soon as the player's king is checkmated. In formal games, it is usually considered good etiquette to resign an inevitably lost game before being checkmated.

What is the best opening line in chess? ›

Nearly half a millennium later, the Ruy remains one of the most popular chess openings. Chess experts have developed numerous variations, and various strategic plans are available to both white and black. You reach the starting position of the Ruy Lopez after the following moves: 1. e4, e5; 2.

What is chess etiquette? ›

Chess Etiquette (mostly OTB's)

Every game must begin and end with the players shaking hands. • Between the two handshakes, no talking is permitted. "Check" need not be said. Players are responsible for noticing where all of the pieces on the board are located, and what threats are pending.

What does GG mean when texting? ›

Means "Good Game", and indicates one of two things: Either it was truly a good, fairly played and close match, or one team got slaughtered.

What does GG mean sarcastic? ›

Gg means "good game", plain and simple. Now sure, people can say "good game" sarcastically to other players they think are "bad", but the vast majority of times, it's just gonna be genuine.

What did GG means? ›

Short for good game, the acronym GG is commonly used in online gaming at the end of matches as a gesture of good sportsmanship.
