If Someone Says GG after They Win a Game, What Is Your Usual Reaction - Chess Forums (2024)

Mine is "yeah whatever, stop showing off". But I still usually reply "gg" anyways...

Is that the right thing to do? Or should I be honest?

I sometimes say "great game" in a vain hope that they appreciate they're not talking to a teenager, but an adult.

My response to "gg" is normally a "same to you". However I do realize that "gg" is only used to lighten the sting of a loss, but in reality it only makes things worse, especially if the loss is with in say 15 moves. How would that be deemed a good game.My idea of a good game is one that could go either way for each opponent.I have yet to respond "gg" to an opponent.My preferenceis "thanks for the game".

Recently, I was playing someone, and getting beat, in turn-based. My opponent asked if I minded if he wrote comments on what he thought of the moves, while we were playing. I said, I didn't mind. He then writes, after one of my moves, that it was a horrible move, and proceeds to criticize my play in general.

Of course, this is only the most recent of many times this has happened to me; having my opponent criticize my play while I play. So I think I am quite hardened from being sensitive to a mere "gg", after I lose

On a more serious note, I do criticize some opponent's play whilst it is occurring. I figure that anyone playing 600-1000 points out of their league must be doing so to gain some insight from the stronger player. When I was learning to play (OTB in those days) the stronger player would usually help out the weaker player with useful comments and observations. Obviously, if I detect any frost from the other side of the board, I desist (unless you're on my trash-talk list, in which case, I really rub it in).

I don't think you should say anything if the game has meaning (tournament, team match etc.) or if the other guy is within (say) 500 points of your rating.

Personally, I only type "gg" if it was a good game i.e. closely fought and interesting.

Don't get me wrong, Prawn. My game was probably boring the hell out of him, and he had to vent But, the sensitivity to "gg" from your opponent after you lose, is such a common topic, that I think peeps need to be hardened a bit, for their own good

yeah, but after readding enough of these threads i have started saying "thanks for the game" instead. of course, i am sure there are some people who would think that i am saying "thanks for being horrible and giving me such an easy adjustmment to my ratings points".

i spent a couple of games with someone trying to come up with good chess trash-talk, but was fairly unsuccessful. are there any books available for this?

If they are from a country which is poorer then the your country you can ask them what´s it´s like to crawl in dirt and die from a simple influenza virus.

Quite handy for Dutch people since there aren´t many countries that have better health care or lower unemployment rate so you can insult about everybody by doing that.

Quite right, in the full spectrum of abuse "gg", even if intended as such, is a long way from some of the more colourful stuff that most intenet chess players experience.

When I'm on the end of a solid beating and the other guy types "gg", I just think he's a bit cheeky.

By this I assume r-frog-one means he eschews the texting shorthand which I do for pretty much for the same reason I suppose. "Good (or great) game" isn't too much to type out. As for the winner giving me a "good game" (or "gg"), sometimes when it's clearly not deserved, I'm fine with that. Unless it's followed up with an epithet (like "loser" which it never is), I figure my opponent is just being courteous which I appreciate.

I usually don't offer a gg unless in response to an opponent's, but if I've played a series of games against the same opponent (in Live) then I'll usually sign off with "ggs, thanks" or something along those lines. Sometimes I'll give a gg if I genuinely thought it merited it, but then only if it was a close game, or if I've just been completely outplayed.

A ritual we're trained to perform since childhood. Generally a good thing, I think, but it seems meaningless for internet chess. "Thanks for the game" works better. If it actually was a good game an applicable interesting comment is preferred. Example: "Nice bongcloud dued!" or "The move 21. a3 really set up some nice tactics and turned the tide!" Get it? A mindless "gg" is boring and pretty useless, we might as well be children slapping hands on a t-ball field.

I never say gg after a game win or lose, and it does not bother me if my opponent says gg.

I say gg after every game,win or lose,before or after my opponent.

Ill ask for a rematch,win or lose depending on whether i enjoyed the previous game.

If it was a good game I say it back otherwise I ignore it and say nothing.

I have always equated "gg" as theonline version of a hand shake. My usual response no matter how the game went... is the same. Too many people I think just read too much into "gg" whenasimpleamiable message was all that was intended.
