Is 8GB of Unified Memory Enough? (2024)

There’s long been an unwritten rule about using at least 8GB of RAM in computers and laptops. Apple has followed the same rule for years, with Macs starting with 8GB of single memory (for models with Apple’s Silicon chip) and then offering to expand it for an additional fee.

But that’s more or less true only for entry-level models. Professional Macs with higher performance start with as little as 16 GB of unified memory. With 8GB of unified memory, there is the MacBook Air with M1 (2020), MacBook Air with M2 (2022), 13″ MacBook Pro with M2 (2022), 24″ iMac with M1, and Mac mini with M1.

In addition to Macs with Apple Silicon, there is also a Mac mini with an Intel processor with 8GB of RAM. Of course, even these base models can be expanded, and you can pay extra for more memory.

8GB of Unified Memory

But as we mentioned above, 8GB has been the standard for several years, naturally opening up an interesting debate. Is 8GB of single memory even enough for Macs, or is it time for Apple to up the ante? The answer to this question is quite simple because, in general terms, it can be clearly said that the current size is fully sufficient.

For the vast majority of these entry-level Macs, it’s no trouble and can fully meet all expectations. On the other hand, it should be noted that 8GB of single memory is not necessarily enough for everyone. While newer Macs with Apple Silicon chips offer plenty of performance, they require more unified memory for more demanding operations.

So if you use more demanding software or do photo editing, occasional video work, and other activities, then it’s best to pay extra for the 16GB memory option. For everyday activities — browsing the web, managing emails, or working with an office suite — 8GB is perfectly adequate.

But once you need more, or you’re working with several apps running simultaneously, for example, on multiple displays, it’s better to pay extra.

The power of Apple Silicon

Apple also benefits from its own Apple Silicon platform. This is why, for example, 8GB of unified memory on a Mac with M1 is different from 8GB of RAM on a Mac with an Intel processor. In the case of Apple Silicon, the unified memory is directly connected to the chip, which makes the entire operation of a particular system noticeably faster.

This allows newer Macs to use available resources better and work more efficiently. However, what we mentioned above is still true. Although 8GB of unified memory may be enough for ordinary users, reaching for the 16GB variant is fine, which can handle more demanding operations noticeably better.
