It’s not easy to get in the game (2024)

ANAHEIMThe calls started lighting up Dustin Penner’s cell phone last weekend, shortly after the Ducks clinched a first-round playoff matchup with Minnesota.

Penner hails from Winkler, Manitoba, a six-hour drive from the Minneapolis area, but it’s the closest NHL city to his hometown. So when family and friends learned he would be coming “home” for at least two games in the series, he became more popular.

“Where I come from, people will wait until the last minute to ask for tickets,” Penner said. “This is only the beginning. I’ll have to anoint someone to take care of that for me.”

Penner will need at least 10 tickets for his parents, Terry and Linda, and other family and friends — a number that likely will grow and put a dent in his wallet.

Contrary to what fans might think, NHL players do not get an unlimited amount of free tickets to games. As per the rules in the collective-bargaining agreement, a player gets two free tickets to home games and must buy from the 50 allotted (100 during the playoffs) to each team for road games.

By contrast, other major sports, such as the NBA, afford players at least two free tickets to home and away contests.

So when the Stanley Cup playoffs got under way this week, so did the second season for friends and family who request tickets from players. And the players’ multimillion-dollar contracts don’t make them different from fans in terms of their ability to secure tickets.

“My buddies are pretty good,” Ducks winger Shawn Thornton said. “They know I have to pay for them, so they get them on their own.”

GOT TWO?

Walk into any NHL locker room after a morning skate and inevitably a player will shout out, “Anybody got two?”

“I’m the worst,” Kings center Mike Cammalleri said. “It’s always been a headache for me. It’s always a problem.”

Cammalleri has a large contingency of family and friends who attend his home games, and it’s a struggle to accommodate them all.

Demand increases when a team gets hot. But it gets particularly hectic when players visit their hometowns.

Cammalleri, from the Toronto area, needed 100 tickets when the Kings visited the Maple Leafs last season. Penner needed 25 for his NHL debut in Minnesota on Oct. 27. Teammate Ryan Getzlaf needs 12-15 tickets when the Ducks go to his hometown of Calgary.

Other occasions can cause extra requests from family and friends, such as when the Ducks played at Detroit this season on the night Steve Yzerman’s jersey was retired.

Generally, Toronto is the toughest because the area produces many NHL players. The Ducks and Kings each have about a half dozen players from Ontario.

Days before a Toronto road game, a Ducks official goes around the locker room with a sign-up sheet to get a rough count on how many tickets the team needs to buy.

“You have to plan for it,” said Alex Gilchrist, director of communications for the Ducks. “There’s so much demand.”

So much that there is an understanding among players not to horde them.

“I can’t sit there and take 20 tickets,” Cammalleri said of Toronto games.

HOOK ME UP

The ticket demand often is one of the first things a player encounters when he reaches the NHL. Minor leagues typically give free tickets to their players, and demand is minimal. At the next level, the numbers inflate.

“You find out where a lot of people are and who you went to high school with when you start playing in the NHL,” said Penner, a rookie of the year candidate. “You get some guy you went to school with for three days and his cousin wants tickets for his son.”

Said Getzlaf, “It’s hard at the start. You want to try and get everybody to a game. You don’t want to overlook people.”

It can add up. Fifteen tickets at, say, $60 each, will run close to $1,000.

“I’ve spent quite a bit of money on tickets over the course of a few years,” Ducks 13-year defenseman Scott Niedermayer said.

Not that most players are strapped for cash. The average NHL salary last season was $1.46 million, according to the Hockey News, while the league minimum is $450,000.

But it’s a matter of principle. Players think they should take advantage of a perk that is afforded them for making it to the NHL.

“Guys expect the free ones,” Niedermayer said.

Niedermayer faced a lot requests when he joined the NHL in 1991. It’s not an issue now, though.

“I’ve got a (luxury) box,” he said.
