Jersey – everything you should know about jersey fabric (20)

When you start to look for the suit that is right for you, you will soon realise that the range of fabrics on offer is huge. You’ll be spoilt for choice.

When choosing a fabric, you should make sure that it is neither too light nor too heavy, firm or flowing and stretchy or non-stretch to precisely meet your requirements. Another important factor is that fabrics used for clothing should have temperature regulating properties. If you are looking for a light, flowing and temperature regulating fabric, jersey is the perfect choice for you. Jersey is not woven but extremely knitted on machines using extremely fine needles. It can be recognised by its typical ribbed finish.

In this guide, we look at jersey fabric in detail and examine the various types, the advantages each has to offer and how to care for jersey fabrics.

The difference

There are different types of jerseys.

Single jersey is knitted using alternating rows of knit and purl stitches, which makes the fabric more elastic. It is quite thin and falls in a slightly flowing way.

Double jersey is knitted using either only knit or only purl stitches. This improves the fabric quality and makes it more robust.

Interlock is knitted using two rows of needles. The front and the reverse side look identical. This type of jersey basically consists of two layers of single jersey woven together on the reverse using a special threading technique. The double layer makes the fabric more durable, opaque and warm.

Fabrics with an attractive textured pattern are created by slipping stitches which are then caught again. This fabric is also knitted using two rows of needles.

Jersey – not only comfortable but also easy to care for.

Jersey fabric is not only comfortable to wear but has also become well-known for being particularly easy to care for. However, you should remember some aspects when washing and drying jersey.

FOR A START, YOU SHOULD LOOK AT THE CARE AND LAUNDERING INSTRUCTIONS.

If you can essentially launder the piece of clothing yourself without any problems, you should definitely select your machine’s delicates cycle or choose to wash it by hand. If the garment has an elastane content of more than 10%, the maximum water temperature should be 30 degrees. It is also a good idea to use a gentle or wool detergent.

If you want to enjoy your favourite piece of clothing for a long time to come, you should air dry it flat to ensure that it definitely retains its perfect shape.

Jersey fabrics do not need to be ironed. In fact, you should actually refrain from ironing them as this might damage the fibres. However, should it become a little bit creased, although this is unusual, you can iron it very carefully with the iron set at the lowest temperature. If in doubt, you should iron a very small piece in an inconspicuous place first of all to check how the fabric reacts to being ironed.
