What is a good Corsi? ›

Generally speaking, a good Corsi has a positive correlation with points/60, with some of the best scorers in the league having good Corsi ratings. This makes sense, as greater offensive pressure and more shots should lead to more points, and having the puck is a big factor in that.

In ice hockey, analytics is the analysis of the characteristics of hockey players and teams through the use of statistics and other tools to gain a greater understanding of the effects of their performance.

Positive Corsi numbers indicate the team spends more time in the offensive zone than the defensive zone, while negative Corsi shows the opposite. This makes Corsi a proxy for "puck possession," although not without controversy.

For an individual player, the Corsi number is calculated by taking the number of shot attempts his team gets at even strength while he is on the ice and divides it by the number of shot attempts the opponent gets while he is on the ice. So, it's like plus-minus, but for shot attempts instead of goals.

This can be presented as a team-metric, or for individual players (how many shots did the team average when an individual was on the ice). 4v5 Corsi Against Per 60 (CA60): The amount of shots allowed by a team during 4-on-5 situations per 60 minutes of play.

Fenwick For (FF): Unblocked shot attempts made by a player in the course of a game while a player is on the ice. Fenwick Against (FA): Unblocked shot attempts allowed by a team for players on the ice.

TSH. Times short-handed. PCT. Power-play goals divided by power-play opportunites or power-play goals allowed divided by times short-handed.

GTG – Game-tying goals – Number of game-tying goals (that is, the last goal scored in a tie game) the player has scored.

The statistic used to track penalties is called "penalty minutes" and abbreviated to "PIM" (spoken as single word "pims"). PIM is an acronym for "penalties in minutes", though the full term is rarely used today. It represents the total assessed length of penalties each player or team has accrued.

Corsi Against (CA) = Shots Against + Misses Against + Blocks For. Corsi For % (CF%) = CF / (CF + CA)

A positive Fenwick number would indicate that a team spends more time in the offensive zone than the defensive zone, while a negative Fenwick numbers would indicate that a team is more frequently in the defensive zone than offensive zone.

Corsi is just the sum of three types of shooting results: either the player put the puck on (or in) the net, the puck was blocked, or the puck missed the net. The formulation is simple: Corsi = Shots on net (this includes goals) + Missed shots + Blocked shots.

Corsi For Percentage (CF%): The total of Corsi For shot attempts divided by the total of Corsi For shot attempts and Corsi Against shot attempts. A player percentage over 50% indicates his team is generating more shot attempts than the opposition when the player is on the ice.

Corsi For Percentage (CF%) is used to evaluate a player's team's puck possession on the ice. A typical hockey player has a CF% between 45% and 55%. CF% is calculated as the sum of shots on goal, missed shots, and blocked shots over the shots against, missed shots against and blocked shots against at equal strength.
