What is a good FV? ›

Anyone with a 55+, 55, or 50+ FV, has likely forced their way into a team's long-term plans. Below that, it starts to get dicey. 50 grades are handed out to players who have a great chance of making the MLB, but project to be mediocre, low-ceiling players.

Definition. Scouting grades have been a staple of MLB.com's prospect coverage for years, and they generally match how clubs grade players as well. Players are graded on a 20-80 scale: 20-30 is well below average, 40 is below average, 50 is average, 60 is above average and 70-80 is well above average.

What is FV? FV stands for Future Value, and it's the way we distill each player's scouting evaluation into a single expression.

The future value formula is FV=PV(1+i)ⁿ, where the present value PV increases for each period into the future by a factor of 1 + i. The future value calculator uses multiple variables in the FV calculation: The present value sum. Number of time periods, typically years.

The future worth of 1 factor (FW$1) is based on the premise that $1 deposited at the beginning of a period earns interest during the period and becomes part of the principal at the beginning of the next period. This continues for the number of periods in the problem.

Credited to Rickey Branch, the MLB scouting scale is a grading system that deviates out from 50. It can go as high as 80 or as low as 20. A player who is graded 50 at something is expected to produce at league average, whereas any points above or below 50 are a standard deviation from the average.
