Top 13 Signs of a Toxic Boss
People don’t leave companies, people leave people.
1. They’re always right
Instead of listening to other opinions, they believe they have all the answers. Those who validate their beliefs are promoted, while those who challenge them are demoted.
2. Favouritism is apparent
Most of the time, it does not depend on performance. Often, their favourite has a clear advantage over the others, such as access to resources or benefits.
3. Your work is credited to them
Whenever you work on an important project & get good results, they will present the findings & take responsibility
4. Only advancing their careers concerns them
The majority of their time is spent managing up and sucking up, but they have no interest in mentoring you. Rarely do you have conversations about your future or development.
5. They never provide constructive feedback
When you are doing a great job, you rarely get recognition or advice on how to improve, let alone exposure to other departments. If you make a mistake, you may only receive feedback.
6. They make inappropriate comments or gestures
Body language like eye rolls and disparaging remarks can have a devastating effect when spoken. Furthermore, they may exhibit subtle (or not so subtle) gender biases.
7. It is they who create team conflict
Teams are pitted against one another to create unhealthy competition and destroy camaraderie.
8. They Gossip
It can be very toxic to work in an environment where gossip is prevalent. They are most likely spreading rumours about you if they gossip about others.
9. Publicly, they humiliate people
Being humiliated and demoralized by your boss in front of your colleagues or direct reports is demoralizing.
10. Micromanager
In spite of assigning you a project, they are constantly involved in the process, or your work. For control and ownership, they micromanage your working days.
11. They gaslight you
The boss may use this tactic to maintain control over you - making you feel as though you're recollecting their words or your accomplishments incorrectly. Your workplace is toxic if you experience gaslighting.
12. No Work-life balance
It's toxic when your boss texts you on your day off, asks you to work overtime on your day off, or keeps you after work for extended periods of time. Especially if your workplace culture discourages working during vacations.
13. They use fear
By making you fear your place in the company or your ability to succeed, a toxic boss can control you or your team. Healthy leaders use positivity and common goals as motivators rather than fear.
