What are the NHL playoffs overtime rules in 2022? (2024)

It's time for the 2022 NHL playoffs.

Which means it's time forNHL playoff overtime hockey.

The rules differ in postseason overtime hockey from the regular season overtime format.

Instead of one 5-minute period of 3-on-3 hockey, as is the custom in the regular season, playoff overtime consists of full 20-minute periods of 5-on-5 hockey.

The game continues until a team scores. Should the game remain scoreless following the first overtime period, an intermission takes place before each team returns to the ice for another 20 minutes. The two teams play as many overtimes as is needed to produce a winner.

Each goal is reviewed by the NHL offices in Toronto.

The longest NHL playoff overtime game lasted six overtimes, a Red Wings' 1-0 win over the Montreal Maroons in Game 1 of the national semifinal in 1936.
