Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) has departed Chicago Fire. The firefighter was one of the most respected and upright characters in the entire One Chicago universe, and his presence will be missed by most everyone he encountered. Most, except for Hank Voight (Jason Beghe).
Voight has had numerous confrontations with Casey over the years, with the former chastising Casey’s inability to see past the law and the latter’s disgust with Voight’s willingness to break the rules. Their rivalry grew to such an extent that it nearly resulted in violence.
As we look back on Casey’s exit, and Voight’s ongoing quest for “justice” on Chicago PD, here’s a rundown of their strained professional relationship.
The confrontation started during Chicago Fire season 1, when Casey arrived on the scene of a serious car crash. The driver of the vehicle was Voight’s son, Justin (Josh Segarra), who had been drinking before he got behind the wheel. Casey ensured that Justin was hit with a DUI, especially when it was discovered that the passenger in the other vehicle had beenparalyzed from the waist down.
Voight was not having any of it. He decided that he was going to do whatever it took to make sure that Justin got off, and attempted bribery before resorting to blatant physical threats towards the unwavering Casey. Voight became so intent on his mission that he even threatened Casey’s fiancé at the time,Dr. Hallie Thomas.

Things escalated to such a feverous height that Voight attempted to have Casey injured or killed (it’s unclear what his intent was) for targeting his son. Fortunately for all parties involved, Voight was arrested by Detective Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) in a sting and sent to prison for a brief stint.
It was during his time in prison that Voight made contact with Dawson’s sister, Gabriela (Monica Raymund), and their work together resulted in both Voight’s release and his promotion toSergeant of the Intelligence Unit at CPD.
Voight and Casey never really crossed paths again after their season 1 confrontation, despite there being plenty of personnel crossover between ChicagoPD and Fire. It’s clear that they have wildly different approaches to their jobs, and are unwavering in these approaches. If Casey ever makes a return to Firehouse 51, we’d definitely be curious to see him revisit things with the grizzled PD veteran.
