Should I buy a hat a size bigger?
If you are between sizes, buy the larger size. Hats will often shrink, especially if they are made of wool so getting a hat that is just a little too tight will become increasingly uncomfortable over time. Size matters, but so does style when it comes to getting the perfect fit.
Microcephaly is a head size (measured as the distance around the top of the head) significantly below the median for the infant's age and sex. Significantly below is generally considered to be smaller than three standard deviations below the mean, or less than 42 cm in circumference at full growth.
People Don't Grow Forever
The only bones that continue to get larger are the skull and the pelvis. The growth of these two body parts isn't dramatic, however. Your pelvis might gain an inch in diameter between the ages of 20 and 79, and your skull may get slightly more prominent around the forehead.
The term macrocephaly means “large head.” If your infant has macrocephaly, they have a head circumference that's much larger than others of the same age and sex. Technically, your child's head circumference (measurement around the widest part of their head) is greater than the 97th percentile.
The most commonly sold size is 10D. The most commonly measured size is 10.5D.
The sweatband inside the hat should provide a snug fit, not a tight fit. If you feel any tension or end up with deep red marks on your forehead, pick a looser-fitting hat. If you can fit one finger between your head and the cap then you know you have the right size.
You should aim for a “snug” fit. That's the perfect fit. If your hat sits too tight, you'll feel like you have some sort of weight on your head and you may feel some tension. The hat shouldn't move around but at the same time, it shouldn't be rock solid as well.
Size up, Not Down
If you measure your head and the measurement comes out in between numbers, it's a good idea to round up to the next 1/8 inch. It might not seem like a lot of variation, but every fraction of an inch can make a big difference when it comes to a comfortable hat.

Hat Sizing Is Not an Exact Science
Even though the hat sizes provided are standard across the USA, there are various factors that can affect the fit such as the hat maker, the material of the hat, and even how much hair you have.
Do hat sizes matter?
Your hat should be proportionate to the size of your face and head. An improperly fitting hat can make you look undignified, frumpy or comical, even if the hat itself is a masterpiece. Luckily, it's easy to determine your hat size, so you can choose your next fedora or panama hat with confidence.
In general, a hat should rest 1/8 inch above your ears. Follow these steps that detail how to measure hat size: Cut a long piece of string -a little over two feet if your head is large.
The other thing that people don't realize is if you lose weight or if you gain weight, your head size changes. So if you've lost a lot of weight, your hat may feel very big on your head, but not to worry. You bring it in and we'll make it smaller for you. If you gain weight, we'll make the hat larger.

Know Your Cap Size
To get your size, measure comfortably around your head where your cap will sit, with a tape measure. Take that number in inches, divide by 3.14 (pi) and round up to the nearest eighth. This is your cap size.
You should aim for a “snug” fit. That's the perfect fit. If your hat sits too tight, you'll feel like you have some sort of weight on your head and you may feel some tension. The hat shouldn't move around but at the same time, it shouldn't be rock solid as well.
Wear it for several weeks before you make any adjustments. Wearing a hat will naturally stretch it out and you'll get comfortable with the fit. This will give you time to notice if it feels too tight, too loose or if there is no need to make adjustments at all.
