Good morning! As most of you know our summer was full of moving! In June, we closed on our old house & moved into our brand new (almost finished!) home. Needless to say we have been busy! This week we are actually (finally!) rolling over our construction loan into a regular conventional loan & closing on our new home. Alright, let me share my 10 tips for saving money when you are moving on a budget. 🙂
1. Find a good place to buy affordable & stylish furniture for your new home. Once you are in your new home, you are going to want to decorate. Maybe you’ll want to add a few new furniture pieces. 2. Pack yourself. You can save so much money by packing yourself. Enlist the help of family & friends (and kids!!!) to make it go quicker. Use old newspapers, blankets & towels to wrap breakables instead of buying packing material.
3. Look for free moving boxes. Don’t go out & buy moving boxes. Look in a local Facebook groups for free boxes. That’s were I found mine. Check out the recycle bins around town. Be sure to put them back in when you are finished. Talk to your local grocery store to see if they’ll save you some boxes.
4. Have friends & family help move you. Instead of hiring a moving company, have friends & family load & unload your belongings. Rent a moving truck or borrow a trailer.
5. Shop around for home insurance. Moving is the perfect time to shop around & compare prices on insurance, since you’ll probably need a new policy for your new home anyways. We ended up saving hundreds of dollars by just shopping around for new home insurance when we moved.
6. Declutter and donate. Before you move, be sure to do a huge declutter. Take things that still have a lot of use left in them to a donation center. Remember to grab a receipt. Most donations can be tax deductible, and that will save you money in the long run. Consider having a garage sale, if you have time.
7. Plan utility shut off dates carefully. Try to time your utilities to cut off before the end of the month. A lot of times they won’t prorate the month, and you’ll end up paying for days you aren’t even there. Be sure to leave them your forwarding address. You never know when you’ll be owed a refund or get a deposit back.
8. Plan easy meals. Eating out can get expensive. Try to stock up on some easy meal ideas for the days before your move and the days after. Crock pot meals are always nice to have ready to go. We also had some really good friends actually offer to bring us dinner. That was amazing! If you ever know someone who is moving, bring them dinner. It’s so helpful. 🙂
9. Pack a moving essentials basket. To avoid running to the store to buy essentials like toilet paper & toothpaste (that you know you have, but can’t find!). Pack a basket full of all the essentials like medicines, toothbrushes & toothpaste, shower curtain, trash bags, toilet paper, shampoo & soap.
10. Try not to stress! Moving is a new adventure. Embrace the change & all that comes with it. Stick within your budget. You’ll have plenty of time to get settled into your new home. Don’t rush it. 🙂
