Amex Gold vs. Platinum: Rewards

Amex Platinum and Amex Gold both come with a nice initial bonus offer, plus yearly opportunities to earn additional credits and various other valuable perks. Amex Platinum ultimately offers more value if you travel frequently, though. For example, its benefits include airport lounge access, while the Amex Gold Card’s perks do not.

When it comes to ongoing rewards on purchases, Amex Platinum has a higher maximum earning rate and better travel rewards. But Amex Gold provides saves you more money on everyday purchases. So, which is better will really depend on your spending habits.

Amex Gold vs. Platinum: Fees

Which would you rather have: Amex Gold for two years or Amex Platinum for one? That’s basically what it comes down to. Because at $695, a single Amex Platinum annual fee would cover Amex Gold’s first two yearly membership fees (at $250 a pop) – and then some.

Neither Amex Gold nor Amex Platinum has a foreign transaction fee. So Amex Gold is the clear winner in this category.

Is Amex Gold Card a luxury card?

Upvotes

Reply

Theresa Chalfant, Writer

@theresa_chalfant

Yes, the American Express® Gold Card is considered a luxury card since it's a metal card with premium rewards on dining, groceries, and travel. Like many high-end credit cards, the Amex Gold card requires good credit and charges a high annual fee ($250 in this case).

Why the Amex Gold card Is a Luxury Card

  • Rewards you with 4 points per $1 at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 spent per year), 4 points per $1 at restaurants worldwide (plus takeout and delivery in the U.S.), 3 points per $1 on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com, and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases
  • Initial bonus of 60,000 points for spending $6,000 in the first 6 months
  • Up to $10 in statement credits each month for eligible dining purchases (enrollment required)
  • Up to $10 in Uber Cash each month
  • $100 hotel experience credit with a minimum two-night hotel stay booked through American Express Travel
  • Made of metal

While the Amex Gold card is not the most exclusive Amex card, it still is one of Amex's best credit cards for high spenders and can be considered a luxury card. Just note that the Amex Gold card's points are worth an average of 0.77 cents when redeemed for travel, which is below the average value you can get from credit card rewards.

It is hard to get the American Express Platinum card because you need a good or excellent credit score of 700+ and a high income to qualify for approval. Although it is difficult to get, the American Express Platinum card can be worth owning thanks to its substantial rewards and benefits.

To get the Amex Rose Gold card, you have to apply for the American Express® Gold Card and request a Rose Gold version. If you are already an Amex Gold cardholder, you just have to request a new card be sent to you in the Rose Gold shade. To do that, call customer service at (800) 528-4800 or the number you see on the back of your card. Alternatively, use the online chat function from your online account.
