Chicago Med Review: Mountains and Molehills (Season 3 Episode 5) (2024)

Chicago MedSeason 3 Episode 5, “Mountains and Molehills,” deals with some broken promises and a mysterious paralysis that appears to be contagious.. Meanwhile, others are starting to take notice of Sarah’s fears.

Honesty Is The Best Policy

Dr. Choi and Nurse Sexton are still keeping their relationship under wraps, but their professional relationship seems to be doing much better. They both get a patient who they believe to have HIV, but the patient is refusing to take the test because of what her family would think.

Despite Dr. Stohl’s worries about her “tab” and a consult with Dr. Charles, in the end, Ms. Goodwin convinces her.

The woman’s aunt knew it wasn’t just the flu, and she encourages the doctors and nurses to do more. They really want to, but it’s all up to the patient, which can be frustrating at times.

Dr. Choi and Nurse Sexton’s patient decides she wants to to go through with the test in the end. She’s finally being honest with herself after refusing the test so many times.

Nurse Sexton may have taken a page from her patient’s book when she decides to be honest with herself and with the hospital. She calls Ethan her boyfriend in front of a few of the other nurses and doctors.

April does this on her own terms, and she seems very happy and content in being honest with her friends and family. Plus, she made their relationship much more real and true by being out and open with it.

Setbacks of the Outback

A mother and daughter come into the ER. The daughter, Denise, is having numbness in her right foot and can no longer feel it. She collapses, but luckily Dr. Halstead comes to the rescue, swooping her up, and he and Dr. Manning take her right away.

With her reflexes not working and the paralysis slowing inching up her body, Will assumes after a spinal tap that it’s Guillain-Barre Syndrome. But because of how quickly the little girl falls victim to the paralysis and because Will also suddenly loses feeling in his foot, GBS is off the table for diagnosis.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome isn’t contagious, nor does it happen that quickly — the paralysis can take a few days.

I have to throw a huge special shout-out to Chicago Med,because this episode was extra special for me.Even though the diagnosis doesn’t wind up being Guillain-Barre Syndrome — instead, it’s a paralyzing tick from Australia — I’m still very appreciative of them even mentioning it.

I had Guillain-Barre Syndrome about seven years ago and it’s rare for a medical drama to even mention it, so thank you. If you don’t fully understand what GBS is, I strongly suggest googling it for more information.

The moral of this patient diagnosis is always check for ticks, because you never know! Also, Natalie having to step out of the room during Will’s spinal tap broke my heart, because you can see that all she wants to do is just be there for him and hold his hand.

Promises You Can’t Keep

As I’ve mentioned previously, Noah has come a long way compared to when he first started. He’s a really great doctor, but with that being said, he needs to not make promises he can’t keep. He has such a huge heart, and he was so hopeful trying to help his patient, Spencer.

After watching a lot of medical shows, I know you’re not supposed to promise a patient or their family that they will definitely be okay. The doctor is supposed to say they will do everything they can, but not make a guaranteed promise.

You know something is going to happen to Spencer when Noah tells his mother and brother to leave and that he will look out for him. Then Spencer collapses, and Noah frantically calls for a crash cart.

It’s so heartbreaking to watch when Connor tries to revive him and gets no response, yet Noah still tries to save him.

It’s intense to see Spencer’s brother hit Noah and push him through the glass door. I commend Dr. Sexton for not wanting to press charges. He knows the family is grieving, and he knows he made promises he couldn’t 100% guarantee.

A Tick Called Fear

In previous episodes, it was hard to see what exactly was going on with Sarah. Now, it’s clear that she’s simply scared. Her fear of patients is only getting worse, and she’s losing confidence in herself as a doctor.

Dr. Charles seems to be doing much better after his vacation time. Yet Sarah hasn’t dealt with any patients since his absence. I really miss Dr. Reese’s enthusiasm and passion for the field; she’s really not doing well.

Not only does Dr. Charles see this, but Maggie and Dr. Choi as well are starting to take notice after outburst.

Sarah Reese: How are we supposed to do our jobs if we don’t feel safe and protected?

Other Thoughts:

  • Dr. Stohl is forgetting what it means to be a doctor. He’s only focused on how much everything is going to cost. Patient care comes first.
  • What’s with Robin shoplifting that scarf? I guess it’s safe to say she shoplifted that dress from the beginning of the episode too. I guess the tumor is back, or maybe she’s not taking her meds? I guess we will find out soon…
  • Natalie and Will kissing in her car at the beginning of the episode is so cute!
  • Natalie is SO happy with Will. It’s so cute how she teasingly asks if he feels everything above the knee before closing the curtains and straddling him. #Manstead, my OTP, is so happy together.
  • Beyond Sarah’s paranoia,I do find the situation with her car strange. Her tires were slashed and now someone breaks in? If it happens a third time, I don’t think it’s random. Right now, it’s very suspicious.
