The hole in Jake DeBrusk’s stick that may be changing his game (2024)

Jake DeBrusk has a big hole in his game this season.

No one in the organization ever expected this to happen. In fact, the hockey world is starting to see more players affected in similar fashion.

Surprisingly, the 23-year-old Bruins forward is comfortable with the hole, and it doesn’t appear he wants to change anytime soon. Who’s to blame?

Point the finger at the fine folks from Bauer Hockey.

In a world of ever-changing technology, Bauer believes it has revolutionized the stick industry. And they did it by cutting a hole in the blade. Yes, you read that correctly. DeBrusk is one of seven NHL players currently taking the ice with a large opening in their stick blade.

The new model, the Bauer Nexus ADV, debuted publicly at the end of January, to coincide with the NHL All-Star game in St. Louis. The company continues to receive multiple requests from players wanting to try it.

“It’s incredibly light and it has pop,” said Bauer’s Justin Bonitatibus.

“It’s an entirely different stick. It is catching a lot of eyes and gaining a lot of buzz.”

Bauer delivered the new stick to DeBrusk on Jan. 11, and he used it for the final six games before the All-Star break and Bruins bye week. In that span, he registered two goals and three assists. His goal against the Vegas Golden Knights on Jan. 21 at TD Garden was an example of how comfortable he feels with the new stick. With a defender draped on his back, DeBrusk sniped a shot from the left faceoff circle and beat goalie Marc-Andre Fleury to the top right corner.

“I’ll say my goal tonight is why (I use the stick),” DeBrusk told The Athletic after that game, saying that the stick feels like it has extra pop to it. “It’s definitely an interesting topic.”

Overall, he has four goals in nine games with his new twig.

The hole certainly makes the Nexus ADV function differently than traditional sticks, but perhaps not in the way many might think. The hole in the blade might seem designed for better airflow, but that’s not actually the case — and in action, tape covers much of the hole anyway. Instead, it’s about weight, and the flexibility of the blade itself.

The hole, the company touts, creates two separate blade sections with different properties that work together while loading and releasing shots.

The portion of the blade above the hole is stiffer, while the blade below the hole is softer and more flexible, an effect the company calls “Slingtech.”

“That’s what creates the slingshot effect,” explained Bonitatibus. “Whenever we talk to players they’re always saying, ‘My stick needs more pop.’ So, how do you quantify ‘pop?’ With Slingtech it delivers that ‘pop’ and that’s what the players are saying.”

The shaft is a bit different, too, with a new five-sided shape that creates a spine down the back of the shaft to help players have better control of the stick, while also reducing weight with less carbon fiber.

Perhaps knowing how a stick with a hole in it might be initially viewed, Bauer used a bit of deception to entice DeBrusk into trying its new creation. The forward attended a Bauer event during the summer when company reps handed him the newest, unreleased stick, already taped up and ready to go. DeBrusk started shooting pucks and immediately felt a difference.

“I felt like I was zipping it and was like, ‘Wow. This stick is unbelievable,’” said DeBrusk. “This stick was awesome. It definitely looks a little different.”

When he was done shooting, he handed the stick back to a Bauer rep, who began to cut the tape off the blade.

“I was like, ‘There’s a hole in it? What’s going on? What happens if the puck goes through?’ I was asking all kinds of questions,” DeBrusk recalls. “It looks like a ball hockey stick. I was second-guessing myself and then I kept shooting with it and was like, ‘boys, I need one of these things.’ I’m not going to lie, I’m ripping it right now.”

Bauer’s subterfuge had succeeded.

“We didn’t want the player to know (there was a hole). We wanted it to be a surprise to get over that mental hurdle to start,” explained Bonitatibus.

Bauer custom made the new sticks for only seven players in the NHL, including DeBrusk, the Hurricanes’ Andrei Svechnikov, the Senators’ Brady Tkachuk, the Avalanche’s Cale Makar, the Canucks’ Quinn Hughes, the Devils’ Jack Hughes and the Blues’ Brayden Schenn.

“I told (Bauer) you let me use this stick I’ll score 20 goals, at least, for sure,” DeBrusk said. “It seemed like the puck just popped off. If you got it right in the money spot it’s pretty hard to stop and it usually goes where I want it to go.”

Bauer also designed a stick for David Pastrnak, but since he’s among the league leaders with 38 goals, no one wants to fix what’s not broken.

“We don’t want Pasta to switch,” Bonitatibus said with a laugh. “Things are going well, so let’s not mess with anything.”

Unlike most pro athletes, DeBrusk is not high maintenance when it comes to his equipment, and that includes his sticks. He often changes the height of his sticks and his teammates regularly chirp him about it.

“I feel like if you’re too dialed in on something and it’s not working then you can get stuck in that position,” he said. “If I’m rolling with a stick, I’ll keep it and it depends on how I’m feeling.”

Thanks to improvements in technology, hockey has become faster than ever before. Every piece of equipment is lighter and more flexible. Sticks have become another front in the battle between skaters and goalies, and the offensive players are always looking to gain an edge.

“It’s mental,” DeBrusk said. “It’s one of those things where it’s not necessarily the stick, it’s the player. But, if the player’s happy using the stick then it makes a big difference. I don’t know if I’ll be using this one for years, but if the puck keeps going in, I will.”
