How to glue plexiglass to wood step by step process

Preparations

Gluing plexiglass to wood is a fairly straightforward process. The most common method to attach plexiglass to wood is by the meaning of glue. This method is incredibly simple to use and is reliable.

hen gluing Plexiglas to wood, you must ensure that the wood has a good surface structure. To get that good texture, you can roughen the surface with some sandpaper. It is best to use 80-grit sandpaper for this. This step also ensures that there is no more dirt or protruding parts on the wood.

Clean the surface completely after sanding the wood to get a suitable texture to glue on and before starting to glue. Wipe any filth away with water and mild soap. The glue will not function well if dust or grime stays on the wood, and the adhesive will come free over time.

Cutting the plexiglass to the right size

Once the wood is clean of any protruding parts, you can cut the Plexiglas to size if necessary.

If the plexiglass is too long or too wide, you need to cut it in half. If you use thick plexiglass, you can use a miter saw or table saw to cut it. If the plexiglass is thin, you can use a utility knife to cut it. In my article, “How to Cut Plexiglass,” I describe step by step how you can do this, so before you make your first cut, be sure to read this article.

Clean the edges of the plexiglass before applying the adhesive to the wood. A utility knife or a piece of sandpaper can be used for this. Roughening the plexiglass where you wish to glue is also a good idea. The adhesive will adhere better this way.

Keep the protective film on the plexiglass for as long as feasible; it will protect the plexiglass from being damaged. Simply remove the protective film from the areas you want to work on to roughen the edges of the plexiglass.

Gluing the plexiglass to wood

As I told you at the start of this essay, attaching plexiglass to wood is simple. This is due to the fact that a variety of glues can be employed for this. Whatever glue you choose from the list I’ll go over below, make sure the plexiglass and wood you’re gluing together are both clean. This will aid in the formation of a solid bond between the wood and the plexiglass.

Another tip is, whatever glue you choose, take care not to put too much adhesive on the wood when applying it.

Make sure that the Plexiglas and wood parts are flush with each other before applying the glue to the wood, but also that there is a little room to move around the Plexiglass. When you have to push the plexiglass into a wood recess, you get holes and the glue doesn’t work at all.

As I previously stated, there are many different types of glues that may be used for gluing plexiglass to wood. I’ll go over each one individually below.

How to glue plexiglass to wood with hot glue

If you don’t have the patience to wait a few minutes for the glue to dry, you should use hot glue. This type of glue is a little thicker than most glues, but ideal for bonding plexiglass to wood. It is extremely strong and does not require any other adhesives.

However, be careful when handling this type of glue. Hot glue can cause not only burns, but also fumes when applied to wood and acrylic.

The advantage of this type of glue is that it hardens quickly after it has been applied. At the same time, this is also a disadvantage because you have to quickly put the Plexiglass in its right place after applying the glue. So make sure everything is neatly prepared, and the plexiglass is cut to size before you start using this glue.

To glue Plexiglass to wood with hot glue, it is sufficient to apply some glue every 2 inches (5 cm). You can also apply glue over the entire length, of course, but keep in mind the fast drying time of wood glue. If the first glue applied has already hardened before you apply the plexiglass, the glue will not bind the wood and the plexiglass.

After curing for a few minutes, your plexiglass will be attached successfully to the wood. Now you can remove the rest of the protective foil if you want.

How to glue plexiglass to wood with CA glue

Ca glue is another type of glue that is increasingly used in woodworking. This glue can also be used perfectly to glue Plexiglas to wood.

You proceed as follows: apply the Ca glue to the wood. You can apply a drop of CA glue every 2 inches (ca. 5 cm) or along the entire length of the surface to be glued. Ca glue will bond faster if you use an accelerator when gluing. That is why you can apply this accelerator to the Plexiglas, where the glue will bond with the wood. By now, placing the Plexiglas in place, the accelerator will activate the CA glue, which will ensure a bond within a few seconds.

Make sure that the Plexiglas is immediately in the right place. Due to the fast curing of the glue, adjustments will not be possible.
Do you want to know more about CA glue? Then take a look at this article: This is why Ca glue is popular for woodworking.

How to glue plexiglass to wood with Epoxy glue

Plexiglas adheres to wood fairly nicely when using epoxy adhesive. A two-component adhesive containing resin and a hardener is used in this type of glue. My post “How And When To Use Epoxy Glue?” has more information. Be sure to check it out.

Mix the resin and hardener and apply to the wood. You can apply this to certain places on the wood as well as over the entire length where the plexiglass and the wood have to be connected. After application, apply the Plexiglas immediately. You have about 5 to 10 minutes to make adjustments before the epoxy glue starts to harden.

Clean Up Any Leftover Adhesive

After the Plexiglas has been applied, it is important to remove excess glue as soon as possible. It is best to use a lint-free cloth or kitchen roll for this, and make sure that no residue is left behind on both the wood and the Plexiglass. This will keep your job looking clean and professional.

Alternatives on how to attach plexiglass to wood

As you can see in this article, there are many ways on how to glue plexiglass to wood, but there are also alternatives in case you cannot use glue or do not want to use glue.

how to attach plexiglass to wood with screws

You can use screws as a first alternative to gluing plexiglass. Drilling a hole in the wood is the first step in connecting a plexiglass panel to it.

Drilling on plexiglass may seem intimidating since you’re afraid the plexiglass will break, but trust me when I say it’s quite simple. You can read my post, How to Drill a Hole in Plexiglass, for further information on how to drill a perfect hole in plexiglass. You’ll find everything you need to properly drill a hole through plexiglass without shattering it there.

After you’ve drilled the hole, you can put a screw in it. It’s very important not to overtighten the screw. The plexiglass may break as a result of this. Always use a screwdriver to tighten the screws rather than a cordless drill. As a result, you always have the most control over the tightness of the screw.

Tighten the screw until the Plexiglas is firmly pressed on the wood.
A screw every 4 inches is recommended to press the Plexiglas firmly against the handle (ca. 10 cm).

how to attach plexiglass to wood by meaning of clamping

Do you not want to drill into Plexiglas and do you not want to use glue? Well, then there is this solution for you. You can keep the Plexiglas in place by clamping it. There are several options for this.
Either you make a slot in the wooden frame where the Plexiglas should come in, or you clamp the Plexiglas to the back.

You can easily make a groove by setting the saw blade of your table saw to the correct depth (from 1 cm deep should be sufficient) and making a groove where you want the plexiglass. After making the slots, you will have to cut the wood to length and immediately apply the Plexiglass when mounting the frame.

If there is no place to cut a slot, you can clamp the Plexiglas against the back of the wood. You can do this by applying a new layer of wood on top of the Plexiglas and sandwiching the glass between two pieces of wood.
You can also use metal fittings such as Picture Turn Button Fasteners or Figure 8 Table Top Connectors. By screwing them onto the back of the wood, they will hold the Plexiglas perfectly in place.
